When a bus switches on its hazard warning lights, you have to be careful - because then you can only overtake it under certain conditions.

It's a situation that many drivers have experienced before: you're in a hurry - and then there's a "sneaky" driving ahead of you.

Now it is important to keep a cool head in spite of all the trouble.

Because whoever pushes and flashes the lights may be guilty of coercion on the road.

Just recently, an overtaking maneuver on a country road escalated – the subsequent fight ended for a Mercedes driver in the hospital.

Even a bus that stops constantly at bus stops can drive you crazy as a driver.

But the same applies in this case: keep calm!

Caution is generally required when overtaking - but especially when a bus switches on the hazard warning lights.

As long as a bus is still driving with its hazard warning lights on, you are not allowed to overtake it.

Bus with hazard lights on: when is overtaking allowed?

Bus and hazard lights?

There was something.

At this point, many a long-time driver dimly remembers his driver's license test.

Only: how exactly was the rule?

First of all, if school or regular buses are marked accordingly and are at a stop (sign with a green "H" on a yellow background), drivers may only drive past the bus with caution - and this also applies to oncoming traffic.

If passengers get on or off, overtaking in the direction of travel may only be done at walking speed and with sufficient distance.

If it is not possible to pass safely, the driver must wait.

The bus drives with the hazard warning lights on – overtaking is then prohibited

At some bus stops, however, the bus drivers turn on the hazard warning lights - and according to § 20 of the Road Traffic Act (StVO), this means that the bus may not be overtaken as long as it is still driving.

Only when the bus comes to a standstill can you pass it again – even if it still has the hazard warning lights on.

However, only cautiously, with sufficient distance and at walking speed - the latter also applies to oncoming traffic as long as the oncoming lane is not structurally separated, for example by a crash barrier.

Overtaking the bus without permission – these penalties are imminent

If you don't keep to the walking speed, according to the ADAC, a warning fee of 15 euros will be due.

If you ignore the overtaking ban or hinder or endanger passengers, there is a risk of a fine of up to 70 euros and a point in Flensburg.

Important: The above rules only apply to appropriately marked school buses and public transport buses.

Private company buses or long-distance buses that stop at a roadside stop are exempt.
