The moon will be bigger and brighter than usual overnight Thursday through Friday at 3:36 a.m. French time.

Not to be missed for lovers of astronomy: the last

“Super Moon”

of the year will be visible overnight from Thursday to Friday.

However, you will have to get up early - or go to bed late - since it can be observed at 3:36 am French time.

It will then appear larger and brighter than usual.

Meteor shower in the night from Friday to Saturday

The term

"Super Moon"

- or "perigee-syzygy" for scientists - was coined by astrologer Richard Nolle in 1979, says NASA on its site.

It designates a new or a full moon which occurs when the star is closest to the Earth.

The axis of rotation between our planet and its natural satellite can indeed vary from 405,000 to 355,000 kilometers.

When it gets as close as possible to the Earth, it therefore appears larger and brighter.

However, this event is not uncommon since it can occur several times a year.

After the

“Super Strawberry Moon”

in June and the

“Super Thunder Moon”

in July, this one is nicknamed the

“Super Sturgeon Moon”.

The names of these phenomena are not due to chance, recalls NASA.

The American periodical

Farmers' Almanac,

founded in 1818, began in the 1930s to give Native American names for full moons.

However, in August, several Native American tribes who lived around the Great Lakes of North America, used to fish for sturgeon.

Another astronomical event will also coincide with this “Super Moon”: the Perseids.

According to NASA, this meteor shower should reach its peak during the night from Friday to Saturday.

The full moon could however make the observation of these many shooting stars difficult.

To try to see them all the same, it will be necessary to find an observatory far from light pollution and other sources of light with a clear view of the sky.
