On the night of Thursday to Friday, people who looked up at the sky were able to admire the fourth and last supermoon of the year.
In France, around 3:30 am, the moon appeared larger (+ around 17%) and brighter (+ 30%) than usual.
This time, the supermoon has also taken the name of "supermoon of the sturgeon", since it is at this time of the year that this fish is caught in several regions in the United States.
The Earth-Moon distance varies between about 356,500 km (perigee) and 406,700 km at the furthest point (apogee).
The supermoon “is not an official astronomical term, but it is generally used to describe a full moon that is at least 90% from perigee,” NASA explains.
The Moon was at its perigee on Wednesday, around 7 p.m. and was less than 360,000 km from the center of the Earth on Friday, at the time of the full Moon.
The phenomenon was visible everywhere on the planet.
