Corona pandemic: RKI reports 63,745 new infections

The number of infections continues to fall, the infection rate is falling, but experts expect a very high number of unreported cases because many infected people do not have a PCR test done.

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) gave the nationwide seven-day incidence on Tuesday morning as 313.6.

This is evident from numbers that reflect the status of the RKI dashboard at 5 a.m.

On Saturday, the value of new corona infections per 100,000 inhabitants and week was 342.2 (previous week: 381.5; previous month: 752.7).

However, this information only provides a very incomplete picture of the number of infections.

  • You can check all current RKI numbers here: COVID 19 Dashboard

Experts have been assuming for some time that there will be a large number of cases not recorded by the RKI - mainly because not all infected people have a PCR test done.

Only positive PCR tests count in the statistics.

In addition, late registrations or transmission problems can lead to a distortion of individual daily values.

The health authorities in Germany recently reported 63,745 new corona infections (previous week: 78,698) and 140 deaths (previous week: 170) to the RKI within one day.

Here, too, comparisons of the data are only possible to a limited extent due to the test behavior, late registrations or transmission problems.

In general, the number of registered new infections and deaths varies significantly from weekday to weekday, since many federal states do not transmit them to the RKI, especially at weekends, and report their cases later in the week.

The RKI has counted 31,599,085 infections with Sars-CoV-2 since the beginning of the pandemic.

The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, as many infections go undetected.

  • A forecast of how the pandemic could develop can be found here: This is how Corona will (quite likely) continue

According to the RKI's last weekly report, the number of people infected with Sars-CoV-2 with symptoms of an acute respiratory infection in Germany and the number of visits to the doctor by infected people have fallen, "so that the current wave peak seems to have been exceeded".

Nevertheless: From the RKI's point of view, it is too early to give the all-clear.

The decline in serious illnesses is currently progressing much more slowly than is observed in the overall figures.

According to the RKI, despite the improved situation in the past week, the infection pressure remains high in all age groups - and so does the burden on the health system.

Federal Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach (SPD) recently made it clear that he expects masks to be mandatory across the board from October 1st due to the ongoing corona risk.

CDU leader Friedrich Merz, on the other hand, had vehemently opposed such a duty "just because of suspicion", "because encroachments on fundamental rights must be carefully justified".
