A 16-year-old Frenchman disappeared at sea on Monday afternoon while diving off Faial, in the Azores archipelago, the National Maritime Authority told AFP.
According to the spokesperson for the National Maritime Authority, the Portuguese rescue services are trying to find the teenager and the search must "resume on Tuesday".
The alert to the disappearance of this diver, "about ten nautical miles (about 18 kilometers)" west of Faial, had been given "by a representative of a tourism company specializing in maritime activities", according to the press release from the Portuguese authorities.
Supported in particular by several ships and an air force plane, the work of the rescuers had been interrupted at the end of the day on Monday.

According to the local newspaper Açoriano Oriental, the search operations, coordinated by the harbor master and the local maritime police command of Horta, are assisted in particular by a maritime police vessel, a rescue station vessel as well as the vessel of maritime tourism from which the diver jumped.
A Portuguese Air Force plane is also to take part in the search.
The island of Faial is located in the central group of the Azores archipelago, a popular destination for tourists, about 1,500 kilometers west of Lisbon.
