NeuRRAM

is the name of

the new chip

inspired by neurons

that promises to

turbo

artificial intelligence

: small and versatile, it consumes

less energy

than conventional chips and

performs

accurate calculations

directly in

memory, without the need to rely on an external cloud, thus offering a wider

range of applications

and better protection of sensitive data.

In the future it could be used in many devices, from

smart watches

to

virtual reality headsets

, from

sensors

for

industry 4.0

to

rovers .

for space exploration.

This is indicated by the study published in the journal Nature by an international research team led by the University of California at San Diego.

Data processing in artificial intelligence is very complex and energy-intensive: its applications in devices usually require data transfer to the cloud, where it is analyzed and processed by artificial intelligence to produce results that are then sent to the device.

“It's like commuting from eight hours away from home to work just two,” explains researcher Weier Wan.

This happens because battery powered devices have little energy to devote to data processing.

By reducing power consumption, the NeuRRAM chip can therefore pave the way for more intelligent, reliable and accurate devices as much as traditional digital chips.

NeuRRAM is very versatile and can support different types of neural networks: this is why it can be used for numerous applications, such as image reconstruction and speech recognition.
