SPD proposal: A 9-euro ticket should continue to apply in Berlin

The low-cost ticket should remain available in the capital beyond the end of August – but for a limited time and region. This is what Prime Minister Franziska Giffey's party is proposing.

The popular 9-euro ticket expires at the end of August.

Whether there will be a discounted ticket for local public transport again afterwards and what such a model could look like is still a matter of debate.

However, Berliners could also benefit from the discounted ticket beyond August: Prime Minister Franziska Giffey's SPD proposes introducing such a regulation by the end of the year.

With the ticket, however, owners could only travel in the AB tariff zone - i.e. in Berlin, not in Brandenburg, and no longer nationwide.

Corresponding media reports were confirmed to the dpa news agency on Friday from party circles.

The heads of the red-green-red coalition met on Friday for a closed meeting to discuss how the country can help people in need, but also companies or institutions in the energy crisis with sharply increased prices.

The proposal for the new, regional 9-euro ticket is on the table.

The 9-euro monthly ticket for local transport, which is valid nationwide, has been available since June.

The three-month campaign financed by the federal government was intended to support commuters in view of high energy prices and to promote a switch from cars to buses and trains.

Possible successor solutions are also a topic at a special conference of the transport ministers of the federal states on Friday.

The Greens had already submitted concrete proposals for a successor model: in a concept paper, they proposed a regional ticket for 29 euros and a nationwide ticket for 49 euros per month.

The Federal Chancellor praised the ticket at the federal government's open day as "one of the best ideas we had" - but he did not comment on a model beyond August.

The FDP is currently the brake in the coalition.

The Federal Government Commissioner for Rail Transport Michael Theurer had recently shown himself open to a 69-euro ticket, and Transport Minister Volker Wissing was also open to the possibility of an offer similar to the 9-euro ticket after the results of the evaluation at the beginning of November would exist.

Finance Minister Christian Lindner has so far stuck to his no.
