After 16 years it's happening: Twitter announced today (Thursday) that it has begun to internally test an edit button (Edit Tweet), which allows users of the social network to correct tweets even after they have been published.
"Through testing, we hope to quickly understand how the new feature is being used, and how it affects the way people read and write tweets," Twitter's official statement reads.
In the current test, it will be possible to edit tweets several times in the 30 minutes after their publication.
Edited tweets will appear with an icon, timestamp, and label, so it's clear to readers that the original tweet has been changed.
Tapping the label will take readers to the edit history, which includes previous versions of the tweet for context.
"With Edit Tweet, we hope to make tweeting easier and more accessible, and allow people more choice and control in the way they express themselves and in the way they contribute to the many conversations on Twitter," added the social network, noting that the feature was first tested with a small group, in order to identify and resolve potential issues before the option is open to everyone.
Later, after the end of the internal test period, the editing button will be launched for the premium subscribers of the social network - Twitter Blue (Twitter Blue) - who pay $4.99 every month.
