Jason Allen, a 39-year-old, won a $300 prize last week in an art contest at the Colorado State Fair, for a piece called "The Art of Space Opera."

So far everything sounds normal, so where is the problem?

The fact that the image was created using the Midjourney image generator, which is based on artificial intelligence (AI).

The decision to choose a work created using AI as the winner of the competition caused great outrage among the other participants in the fair who raised the question of what counts as art.

In response, Allen said: "I'm not going to apologize for it... I won, and I didn't break any rules. Artificial intelligence is a tool for creation just like a paintbrush is a tool."

In an interview with CNN, Alan claims that the process of processing and creating the three works with which he participated in the competition, which also included editing in Photoshop and playing with different expressions in the software, took him more than 80 hours.

"It's not that you just throw words at the software and win the competition," said the winner, adding: "Instead of hating the technology or the people behind it, we should recognize that it is a powerful tool and use it forever so that we can all move forward instead of being angry about it."

Also, the web didn't remain indifferent either: "This is so disgusting," wrote a Twitter user, adding: "I can see how AI art can be useful, but to claim you're an artist by creating one? Another tweet read, "We're watching The arts are dying before our eyes - if creative works are not safe from machines, then even highly skilled works are in danger of becoming obsolete."

TL;DR — Someone entered an art competition with an AI-generated piece and won the first prize.

Yeah that's pretty fucking shitty.

As mentioned, Midjourney is an image generator using artificial intelligence, just like the familiar DALL-E.

The software uses billions of parameters to interpret textual input from natural language and create imaginary images and visual images solely based on text entered by the user.

How It Works?

You write a sentence - and the artificial intelligence model will create an image from it quickly and with impressive quality.

The software has free versions that allow the creation of about 25 images, after which it is necessary to register for the service with a fixed monthly subscription.

In the last month, photos edited by artificial intelligence and intended to simulate how humans will look in their last moments before the apocalypse have stirred up the web.

In fact, all the creator asked of the software was to show "the last selfie taken on Earth".

In the pictures you can see, among other things, half human half mutant, quite scary people holding their cell phones, while in the background you can see a huge fire burning and burning the world.

In another startling image you can see a burnt man and behind him a huge cloud of smoke.
