The account of the pornography website PornHub has been removed from Instagram.
The account, which had 13 million followers and 6,200 posts, did not publish pornographic content per se, but was mainly involved in the promotion of such content found on the site.
The circumstances of the removal are unclear and it is not clear if Meta (Facebook), the parent company of Instagram, is responsible for the move.
However, Lila Micklewhite, an activist against the site, claims that the account was removed due to "violation of the community terms".
This claim has not been verified by Meta.
Micklewhite is behind the TraffickingHun campaign calling for the closure of PornHub and the prosecution of its managers for aiding and abetting rape, child abuse and human trafficking for sex.
Micklewhite's critics note, however, her ties to conservative evangelical Christian groups, which support the complete eradication of the pornography industry.

On the other hand, the allegations against PornHub in recent years claim that the site helped distribute content that harms minors, which led to the resignation of the previous CEO. In 2020, the credit companies Visa and Mastercard stopped processing debit transactions to the site, due to "illegal content", along with lawsuits filed against the credit agencies on the subject. In response to the criticism, PornHub removed all content from unidentified users, and canceled the option of downloading videos.
One of the plaintiffs against Mindgeek, the parent company of PornHub, in which Visa is also mentioned as a defendant, is Serena Platts, who, following pressure from her partner Her and when she was 13 years old, she took a pornographic video, which she claims was uploaded to PornHub without her permission or knowledge. Platts is one of a dozen plaintiffs who made allegations of exploitation and making a fortune from child pornography, rape, human trafficking and use of stolen content against PornHub.

PornHub previously commented that they have "zero tolerance for illegal content on the platform, and we have placed barriers on the user content platform. Any claim that MindGeek does not take illegal content seriously is false."
The company also added that it does not allow those who have not been verified with an official ID to upload videos, and even put into use supervision and monitoring tools.
Meta did not respond to requests for comment from "Variety" and TheVerge.
