After a very long wait, Ferrari unveils Purosangue: the first SUV in the history of the Prancing Horse.

Streamlined front, sculpted sides, well-defined cabin, four doors and four real seats on board, a capable trunk and even the ability to fold down the seats.

All driven by the very classic naturally aspirated Ferrari V12 engine, capable of delivering 725 Hp, mounted in a central-front position on a 4x4 architecture with variable ratio.

F1 double clutch 8-speed gearbox These are the numbers of Purosangue, whose gestation was 48 months of work, starting from a blank sheet.

Plus many others, first, wondering whether to launch the project.

Sergio Marchionne in 2017 at the Geneva Motor Show had categorically excluded it, only to then confirm it in 2018, in one of his latest public appearances.

Purosangue represents an epochal challenge for the House: it must not betray the Ferrari tradition despite the new model, loudly requested by customers and the market, and which acts as a bridgehead towards a segment never explored in these parts.

The lines are unquestionably those of Ferrari's recent stylistic course imprinted by Flavio Manzoni, chief designer of Maranello.

Look at the photos

And in fact, the madeleines they report to the 296 GTBs, or to the Ferrari Roma, are really numerous.

Almost 5 meters long and 1.60 meters high, Purosangue is the first 4 seats - 4 doors of the House.

The imposing front has large extractors in the middle area.

The position of the headlights is original, set under the fenders, at the usual height of the headlights of the other cars of the House.

At the rear, the headlights are a breakdown of the classic round into 4 elongated 'biscuits', while the four exhausts are the protagonists of the lower area.

The carbon wheel arches, in contrast with the livery, highlight the sides.

The imposing bonnet - bonnet and fenders merged into a single element - is designed by muscular lines that branch off from one side towards the spacious cabin, from the

The active suspension for the Purosangue has been developed from scratch for optimum driveability in all conditions.

To guarantee rear seat passengers the Ferrari experience, we preferred to limit the seats to two, but single and almost identical to the front ones, rather than opting for a bench for three which, although comfortable, would not have given the same comfort.

Ample space on board.

Wow effect for the upwind opening of the doors.

Easy descent and access on board.

The rear seats can be folded down and the parcel shelf removed, creating a volume suitable for bulkier loads.

Purosangue stops the scale at about 2 tons, and to contain the weights it was necessary to calibrate every detail: the 'base' roof is in carbon (but it is also available in a suggestive crystal that changes opacity depending on the light conditions) and the frame is the lightest of all the other Quattroporte of the Cavallino.

Extensive use of carbon fiber.

Overall, around 80% of the components have been redesigned.

The engine of the Ferrari Purosangue, exclusively thermal and non-hybrid to ensure comfort, has been designed to ensure maximum torque available from low revs without sacrificing the continuous progression characteristic of the naturally aspirated V12s from Maranello.

80% of the torque is available from 2100 rpm.

and peak torque of 716 Nm is reached at 6250 rpm;

the maximum power of 725 hp at 7750 rpm.

and the response to driver inputs are worthy of a sports car.

"I have goosebumps," said Benedetto Vigna, CEO of the Group, betraying sincere emotion, as he lifted the red flag from the car during the presentation in front of the press from all over the world.

"Purosangue is not an SUV - he clarified, despite the measures that bring the latest addition to the Cavallino in that segment - but a new concept of car that was not there before. It is a sports car, as always. we build, but with the characteristic of the four seats, high from the ground and also suitable for dirt roads ".

Enrico Galliera, marketing and commercial director of the Cavallino, explained that the name 'Purosangue' was chosen during some brainstorming among the top management of the Maranello company.

Everyone agreed that this car should leave the characteristic qualities of the Cavallino cars intact.

"We told ourselves that it had to be uncompromising, kicking, like a horse with a shiny coat ...".

And as proof that it is not an SUV but a category in itself, it recalls the sports chassis and the impossibility of installing the towbar.

Four colors available at launch, except for customizations: Purosangue Black, Italian White, Portofino Red and Titanium Gray.

The presale 'in the dark', that is, without ever having even seen a drawing of the car, marked record numbers.

The price starts at 390 thousand euros, deliveries from the second quarter of 2023. With a cap on the market, which could make the Purosangue a cult object: it will not represent more than 20% of sales.

To complete the circle of emotions, all that is needed is to be able to get on the road.

One of the many journalists present, while he was inside the car, was unable to restrain himself and pressed the start button.

A few seconds just before turning off, but the massive voice of the V12 annihilated the room.

And that's just the beginning.
