Crossing accident at a red light, power intersection (green light)

"A friend who was traveling with me and I entered the intersection at a green light and suddenly a driver coming from the right entered the intersection at a red light at high speed and hit us," is how Nathaniel Sde Makserin describes what happened last Friday morning at the Kach intersection on Route 90. "The friend sitting next to me and I suffered severe blows and the vehicle was damaged . We had to evacuate to the hospital in an ambulance. The driver of the car that ran through the red light was a young soldier and he was also very lightly injured, beyond the injuries the vehicle sustained. I don't know why he ran through the red light, but something distracted him so that he didn't pay attention to the red light."

Nathaniel's description of this situation can also be relevant to dozens and hundreds of other cases of passing a vehicle at a red light that end in an accident and who knows how many miraculously ended without injuries.

For years, disobeying a red light has been the leading cause of traffic accidents and by a significant margin from second place (failure to give the right of way), whether it is the Jewish or the Arab population.

Just let's get to know the numbers, in 2020 disobeying traffic lights was responsible for 21.7% of accidents, speeding 2.3%, now you tell the enforcement of which of these offenses are you more exposed?

Attorney Yaniv Yaacov, CEO of the Or Yerok Association: "Crossing an intersection with a red light has become a real scourge. We have been encountering this phenomenon recently in an increased manner, as in the accident of the actor Nero Levy. Fortunately, the accident at the Kach intersection ended with minor injuries and no loss of life. The way to reduce the offense in which drivers beep the red light and enter the intersection is through prominent and controlled traffic light cameras. A driver who knew he was entering an intersection with a camera and if he ran a red light he would be severely fined, would not be in such a hurry to endanger the lives of all of us."

Traffic offenses that you won't be able to avoid with just a warning

In the "Mind pool" survey conducted in April 2022, alarming data emerged regarding the reality on the roads as testified by the drivers.

A perusal of the survey shows that 87% of the participants claimed to have seen a driver cross an intersection at a red light at least once in the past year.

21% claimed to have seen at least four drivers who did this in the past year.

But it's not just the driver, the other, a quarter of the respondents (24%) admitted that they themselves crossed a red light intersection at least once in the past year.

8% of them did it even more than once.

But why does this happen?

Surprisingly, the immediate accusation of inattention or distraction is not what emerges from the survey.

78% of people believe this happens due to the driver trying to "make it" to cross the intersection when the light turns red.

15% believe that the drivers "don't see the traffic light", meaning they drive carelessly and 7% don't know the reason.

When it comes to the question of deterrence from running a red light, it seems that the public does believe that something can be done, no longer wants to hear about information and education - but rather favors direct, automatic and non-statistical enforcement.

Enforcement of the type that is appropriate for traffic offenses from which it is not possible to escape with a warning due to the level of life risk in them.

When asked whether cameras placed at intersections would deter drivers from crossing a red light intersection, the majority of the public (66%) responded that placing cameras would deter drivers from crossing a red light.

So maybe after the millions upon millions that the state poured into the useless speed cameras, they will find a use instead of turning into scrap metal in the form of traffic light cameras.
