Trailer for the international version of "Phantom of the Opera", 2019 (PR)
The show "Phantom of the Opera", one of the most successful musicals in history, will leave the Broadway stage this February after 35 years - this is what the New York Post reports today (Saturday).
It is the longest running show on Broadway now, not including a forced hiatus during the corona outbreak in the city.
The show that will inherit the title will be the revival of the musical "Chicago", which ran for 25 consecutive years.
The plot of "Phantom of the Opera", penned by Andrew Lloyd Webber, is based on a Gothic novel that takes place at the Royal Opera in Paris and tells about the tragic love of the Phantom, a musical genius with a distorted appearance, for the beautiful young opera singer.
The music that accompanies it combines rock, classical music and light opera.
To date, since its premiere on January 26, 1988, "The Phantom of the Opera" has been performed 13,733 times, and has won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
The musical is considered one of the most profitable of all time, and several attempts were made to ride on its success, with a sequel and even a film version in 2004, but these had difficulty reproducing the effect.
In any case, since production restarted last October, the Post reports, it has been losing about $1 million every month.
For now, it continues to run in London's West End.
