It is an organ of the human body about which we do not know much.
However, the intestinal microbiota is a veritable ecosystem made up of some 100,000 billion bacteria, viruses, parasites and fungi, nestled in our digestive tract and weighing between 1 and 2 kg.
It is to map this “terra incognita” that a huge global database aimed at analyzing 1 million microbiota has been launched.
In France, the French Gut project, led by the National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and the Environment (Inrae) with the hospitals of Paris (AP-HP) and Inserm, is looking for volunteers to to analyze their stools.
“For the moment, we have samples collected only from sick people.
We have a lot to learn by characterizing the microbiota of healthy people”
, explained Joël Doré, research director specializing in the intestinal microbiota at Inrae at the launch of the project on Thursday.
