Most drivers are familiar with the fact that you have to stop at a stop sign.

But how long?

And what if there is no stop line?

The theoretical knowledge that you acquire for the driver's license test evaporates over time for most drivers.

As a recent ADAC test revealed, many test subjects showed large gaps.

A traffic sign that everyone knows has eight corners, is red - and has white "STOP" lettering on it.

Of course you have to stop here.

But what other rules apply to the shield?

Motorists must stop at a stop sign – all wheels must come to a complete standstill.

Stop sign: Not everyone knows the exact rules of the traffic sign

The official designation of the stop sign (traffic sign 206) reads: "Halt.

Give way".

The big difference to sign 205 (“give way”, red and white triangle) is that you have to stop at the stop line – even if there is no traffic flowing at first.

If no stop line can be seen, the driver must stop at the point from which he can see the road with priority - this is referred to as the so-called "line of sight".

Stop Sign: All wheels must come to a complete stop

The question now arises as to how long you have to stop - but this is not regulated by law, at least not in a specific time specification.

The only requirement is that all wheels must come to a standstill.

According to the ADAC, parking in front of a stop sign is only prohibited if it is covered by the vehicle.

So parking shouldn't be a problem if you're driving a car - but it should be for larger vehicles such as trucks or mobile homes.

But be careful: There is a general ban on parking at intersections up to a certain distance: you are not allowed to park your vehicle up to five meters before the intersection of the street that leads into it.

If there is a cycle path, it is even eight meters - the greater distance is intended to increase safety for cyclists.

Stop sign: Failure to comply will result in fines

If a driver ignores a stop sign, there is a risk of a fine of 10 euros.

It becomes significantly more expensive if other road users are endangered when being run over: A fine of 70 euros is then due, and there is a point in Flensburg.

If there is an accident, 85 euros are due - and also one point.
