Contrary to its popular perception in Israel since the happy Lancer days, in the world, Mitsubishi is a very small car manufacturer and limited in its development capabilities.
Its bet several years ago to stop producing passenger cars (with the exception of the Space Star/Atrage) and focus on crossovers managed to keep its head above water for a period of time, but here too the credit runs out and the company's solution lies in maximizing collaborations with its parent concern - Renault- Nissan.
This is reflected in the sharing of the platform of Mitsubishi Outlander and Nissan Xtrail (the next generation, not the current one) and we will meet it on other occasions.
At the moment what we are seeing is another way to deal with the need to innovate at a minimum cost - putting a Mitsubishi logo on an existing product, in this case on a Renault Captur.
will be smaller than the current ASX, but will be marketed at the same time (photo: manufacturer website)
The use of the capture also leads to an interesting situation where a "new generation" of a certain model is actually smaller than the outgoing generation.
At 422cm long, 180cm wide, 158cm high and a 264cm wheelbase it is smaller in all dimensions than the old ASX.
Where it gets an upgrade is the trunk which increases from 387 liters in the ASX to 536 in the Mitsubishi-Renault-ASX-Capture.
The passenger compartment also remains completely identical to Renault's.
In one key aspect, the reliance on the Capture should catapult the ASX forward, and that is the area of advanced safety systems and safety in general.
Officially the ASX carries five European crash stars, but this is a test from 2011 whose scores are considered "expired" in modern terms.
The capture tested in 2019 also has 5 stars, but these were accepted according to the stricter standard.
Either way, it will allow the ASX to use active safety systems such as adaptive cruise control, lane departure correction and blind spot detection.

Of the four engines of the ASX, three are relevant to Israel (unless they find justification for a 1.0 liter, 3 cylinder, 90 hp manual engine). All are sold by Renault, some are also found in Israel. The first engine is a 1.3 liter, 4 cylinder, supercharged Turbo with 140 hp that is also equipped with a mild hybrid system and a 7-speed double clutch gearbox.
Above it is the hybrid version, 1.6 liters, 4-cylinder atmospheric boosted by an electric motor and a maximum power of 140 hp. The combination here is for the combination of the planetary gearbox for the gasoline engine and an electric box for the electric one. Does this arrangement sound familiar? It also appears in the Renault Arcana. The
top version will have Plug-in engine with a combined power of 160 hp.
Here, a gasoline engine and an electric motor fed by a 10.5 kWh battery will allow it to move for a declared range of 50 km.
The ASX will arrive in Israel in the middle of 2023, and it will be marketed here at the same time as the current ASX.
