British author Hilary Mantle has passed away at the age of 70. "We are heartbroken at the death of our beloved author, Dame Hilary Mantle, and our thoughts are with her friends and family, especially her husband, Gerald," read an official tweet from her publisher, 4th Estate Books.
"This is a tremendous loss and we can only be grateful that she left us such a magnificent body of work."
The cause of her death was not disclosed.
Mantel is best known for her celebrated Thomas Cromwell trilogy: "Wolf Hall", "Bring the Bodies" and "The Mirror and the Light", which was published in her homeland in 2020 but has not yet been translated into Hebrew, after the first two were published in Israel by Babel Publishing.
The trilogy deals with Cromwell, Henry VIII's adviser, against the background of the exploits and actions of the illustrious king - his struggle to shake the Catholic Church from England, his six wives, the unknown number of his mistresses, and his penchant for sending intimates to the gallows.

The first two books in the trilogy made Mantle the first woman ever to win two Booker Prizes.
Both were also adapted into the BBC's acclaimed miniseries Wolf Hall, starring Mark Rylance and Damien Lewis.
Before the Cromwell trilogy, Mantle wrote a number of other novels, of which "An Experiment in Love" was also translated into Hebrew.
