Nobel labs pave the way for quantum computers

DECRYPTION - Professor Anton Zeilinger, one of the three recipients of the Nobel Prize in Physics this year, has designed the optical "key" allowing quantum encryption of video communication over 7600 kilometers away.

Everyone already uses quantum mechanics without knowing it.

This theory is the basis in particular of the lasers which make it possible to operate a CD player, or of the flat screen technology called “Oled” which equips mobile phones.

But other revolutions are promised thanks to the “entanglement” of photons (the elementary particle of light), electrons (the negatively charged particle which gravitates around an atom) or even atoms.

Two large families of applications can be described.

Quantum Communications

At the end of his presentation of the Nobel Prize in Physics, Professor Thors Hans Hansson of the Swedish Academy hailed the feat of the Micius satellite, which had enabled quantum encryption of video communication over 7600 kilometers away.

A record established without great secrecy between the Academy of Sciences in China and that of Austria.

But the performance had been achieved by means of an optical “key” designed by Professor Anton Zeilinger, one of the three recipients of the 2022 prize, and one…
