2022-10-07T09:16:09.415Z

The corona numbers continue to rise. In Munich, the incidence reported by the Robert Koch Institute is even over a thousand. The number of intensive care patients is also increasing nationwide.

The corona autumn wave is causing four-digit incidences in more and more Bavarian cities and districts: On Friday morning, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reported official values over 1000 for nine districts and the state capital Munich. On Thursday only four districts were above this threshold, a week ago not a single one.

Throughout Bavaria, the seven-day incidence rose to 818, which is an increase of almost 25 percent within a week.

This means that the values are currently no longer rising as quickly as in the week before last - however, they may still be distorted by the public holiday on Monday.

In addition, individual counties apparently did not report any current figures to the RKI.

Numbers in Munich increased in the second week of the Oktoberfest

The districts currently have the highest incidence in Bavaria

  • Fürstenfeldbruck

    with 1333.6,

  • Ebersberg

    with 1265.2

  • and

    Dachau

    with 1206.8.

A certain concentration around Munich, where the Oktoberfest ended at the beginning of the week, is also noticeable.

Both the city and three of the four directly adjoining districts are over 1000, the district of Munich only relatively slightly below.

In the second week of the Oktoberfest, the numbers in Munich had risen sharply.

Even before the festival, experts had predicted a Wiesn wave.

The RKI gave the nationwide seven-day incidence on Friday morning at 577.5.

The day before, the value of new corona infections per 100,000 inhabitants and week was 462.4 (previous week: 466.0; previous month: 217.2).

However, this information only provides a very incomplete picture of the number of infections.

Experts have been assuming for some time that there will be a large number of cases not recorded by the RKI - mainly because by far not all infected people have a PCR test done.

Only positive PCR tests count in the statistics.

In addition, late registrations or transmission problems can lead to a distortion of individual daily values.

That is why SPIEGEL.de will only report the number of infections as part of the RKI weekly report and in the event of special events.

The health authorities in Germany recently reported 174,112 new corona infections (previous week: 96,367) and 117 deaths (previous week: 140) to the RKI within one day.

Here, too, comparisons of the data are only possible to a limited extent due to the test behavior, late registrations or transmission problems.

In general, the number of registered new infections and deaths varies significantly from weekday to weekday, since many federal states do not transmit them to the RKI, especially at weekends, and report their cases later in the week.

In the course of the beginning corona autumn wave, the RKI pointed out the difficult interpretation of certain data on the severity of the disease.

In the case of severe respiratory infections that have to be treated in hospital, there are signs of an increase in the number of cases, according to the RKI's weekly report on Covid-19 on Thursday evening.

However, the authors limit that “cases are also listed here that come to the hospital due to another illness or require intensive care treatment and in which the Sars-CoV-2 diagnosis is not the focus of the illness or treatment”.

Among other things, the RKI cites a sharp increase in the number of intensive care patients in connection with Covid-19, from around 860 in the week before last to around 1310 on Wednesday.

The problem has long been known that these data, like the hospitalization incidence, do not allow a distinction to be made between patients who are being treated for Covid-19 or with proof of Sars-CoV-2.

Improvements have been announced for months.

However, clinics also argued, for example, that the effort required to isolate all patients who tested positive was the same.

In the report, the RKI always looks at another data source, in which patients with accidental corona findings, for example, should not be of any importance: so far, an increase has only been indicated in the age group from 80 years up to the week before last, it said .
