A4 Avant 40 TDI Allroad Quattro, there really is something more

Allroad: it is almost a magic word, born in 1999 to identify a semi-offroad version of the second generation A6 Avant model, that is the one called C5.

In 2009, the House of the Four Rings then extended this trim level to the A4 as well, which becoming the Allroad Quattro completed the offer of the traditional Avant in the D Premium segment.

The A4 Allroad stands out for its 6 mm wider track at the front and 11 mm at the rear (accompanied by plastic wheel arch extensions), for specific outer belt elements - such as underbody protectors - but also for greater height from the ground and due to the presence of adjustable pneumatic suspensions.

The differences with the Audi A4 Avant 40 TDI Quattro S-Tronic - which had been the subject of an Ansa Motori test in March 2021 - are not limited, however, to the aesthetic elements with an off-road look or to the adaptation of the suspension.

The A4 Avant 40 TDI Allroad Quattro S-Tronic version examined today introduces a Mild Hybrid variant of the excellent 4-cylinder 2.0 turbodiesel that delivers 204 Hp, against the previous 190, and offers a series of important improvements in terms of efficiency, performance and driving quality thanks to the presence of the 12 Volt Mhev system.

At the heart of Audi's new mild hybrid system is the belt-driven RSG starter alternator, which is connected directly to the crankshaft.

This particular 'electric car'

in the deceleration phases it works as an alternator and recovers energy by transferring it to a specific 12 Volt lithium ion battery.

When starting, accelerating or in other phases (such as stop & start), the RSG instead provides electrical assistance to the diesel engine, improving response and lowering consumption and emissions (up to 11%).

If the pedal is then released in a range between 55 and 150 km / h - a fairly frequent condition both on ring roads and on the motorway - the diesel engine of the A4 Avant 40 TDI Allroad Quattro S-Tronic switches off and the so-called 'sailing' with the car that proceeds by inertia.

The engine control system automatically manages the restart (absolutely not perceptible) while the presence of the S-Tronic gearbox does not require any other maneuvers.

As ANSA Motori was able to verify in the articulated road test, this latest version of the Volkswagen Group 2.0 turbodiesel, thanks also to the refined exhaust gas treatment devices, offers a real contribution to the reduction of polluting emissions - including the twing dosing with double urea injection, which is decisive for reducing NOx - as well as the advantageous containment of travel costs due to the efficiency of the diesel.

Approved for consumption including fr 5.1 and 5.8 liters per 100 km, with 134 g / km of CO2, the A4 Avant 40 TDI in this Allroad Quattro set-up does not struggle to stop the on-board computer in the context of the 6, 5-7.5 liters per 100 km which means covering in daily use and also on the motorway between 13.4 and 15.4 km with a liter of diesel.

The torque, of 400 Nm, and the functionality of the S-Tronic gearbox guarantee an always prompt response, with 0-100 acceleration that is achieved in 7.1 seconds and a top speed (in the absence of limits) equal to 236 km / h.

The Quattro all-wheel drive system was also promoted with flying colors, which in this model is now of the Ultra type, therefore even faster in responding to driving style and road conditions.

The distribution of the torque at the rear occurs only when necessary on the basis of a logic that is not only reactive but also predictive, with the advantage over permanent systems of lower power absorption.

The ability to drive in real conditions - including at night - also allowed for a precise assessment of one of the systems which, in the A4 Avant 40 TDI Allroad Quattro S-Tronic as in many other Audi's, is a real flagship: the full headlamps Led with high beam assistance.

The system recognizes the presence of the headlights of cars arriving in the opposite direction,

rear lights of vehicles in front and light sources in built-up areas and - depending on the traffic situation - switches sections of the light beam or all the main beam on and off automatically, improving safety and visibility.

There is also the automatic dynamic adjustment of the depth of the headlights, accompanied on the motorway by the automatic increase in depth starting from a speed of about 110 km / h.

For the version subject of our test, the price list starts at 52,000 euros, but there are also the variants 45 TFSI Mhev petrol with 265 Hp (from 56,450 euros) and 50 TDI diesel 286 Hp with Mhev 48 Volt system (from 58,150 euros ).
