Apple introduces new iPads and a faster Apple TV

A simple press release was enough this time: Apple presented new tablets and a new TV box on Tuesday evening. Innovations should not only satisfy professional users, but also the EU.

The Apple event to present the iPhone 14 series was the first product presentation with a live audience in years - and possibly the only one in 2022. Because the group announced the next round of new gadgets on Tuesday without an event.

Only a tweet from company boss Tim Cook, in which he teased the upcoming innovations with a short video, caused some excitement on the net in the afternoon.

»The possibilities are endless«, »the possibilities are endless«, wrote Cook on the hashtag #TakeNote.

For Apple fans, the highlight should be Apple's bread-and-butter tablet, the iPad.

For the first time in years, the design of the tablet, which starts at 579 euros by Apple standards, has been completely revised and adapted to the look of the current iPhones and iPad Pro models.

The case of the tenth generation iPad is more angular, the screen has become larger, it now measures 10.9 inches instead of the previous 10.2 inches.

It's powered by the Apple A14 Bionic chip, which made its tablet debut in 2020's iPad Air and powers the 12-series iPhones.

In line with the upcoming USB-C obligation in the EU, it has a USB-C socket instead of the Lightning connection previously used.

Almost all Apple tablets have now been converted to the new connector standard.

What is also new is that the iPad now masters the Wi-Fi 6 WLAN standard, which has not been widely used up to now, and in the so-called “Wi‑Fi + Cellular” variant can go online via 5G networks when on the go.

Both the front and rear cameras have been upgraded to 12 megapixels, and new stereo speakers are said to improve the sound.

Like its predecessor, you can write and draw on the screen with a first-generation Apple Pencil.

However, anyone who already has such an Apple pen needs an adapter in order to be able to charge it via USB-C.

With a price of 10 euros, it is likely to be Apple's cheapest product at the moment.

The iPads themselves can be ordered immediately at prices between 579 and 979 euros and will be available from October 26th.

More power for the iPad Pro

With the new versions of the iPad Pro family, the innovations are less clear.

First and foremost, both the 12.9-inch model and the 11-inch model are equipped with the M2 chip, which the company also uses in the current MacBook Pro and MacBook Air.

Apple promises performance increases of up to 15 percent compared to the M1.

The new iPad Pro models connect to wireless networks via Wi-Fi 6e, provided the network can do that.

A new "hovering function" in the second-generation Apple Pencil seems to be particularly interesting.

This does not ensure that the digital pen hovers, but that the display recognizes it when it is still twelve millimeters away from the screen.

This should make it possible to draw and write more precisely.

In addition, many other functions with which the new iPads are advertised are based on iPadOS 16, which should also be available for older models as a free update from October 24th.

The new software is intended to simplify multitasking via a “Stage Manager”, among other things, bringing innovations for the photos app and the news app.

Just like the iPads without »Pro«, these models can be ordered now and will be delivered from October 26th.

Prices start at 1049 euros for the 11-inch model and 1449 euros for the 12.9-inch iPad Pro.

In the maximum configuration, with 2 TB of storage and a mobile phone module, the top model will cost 3024 euros.

Play more on TV

In addition to the iPads, a new version of the Apple TV 4K set-top box was also announced.

Equipped with the A15 Bionic chip, which also powers the iPhones of the 13 series, this should enable smoother gameplay in video games and films can now also be played on corresponding TV sets with HDR10+.

However, you will only benefit from the plus in details and color reproduction if the content is geared towards it.

The new model is also available in two versions: one with 64 GB of memory and a WLAN module, the other with 128 GB, an additional LAN socket and better smart home functions.

According to Apple, the new Apple TV 4K should be available from November 4th.

Prices are listed as €169 for the 64GB model and €189 for the 128GB model.

All in all, Apple has some news to announce, but maybe not enough to warrant a live event.
