Other than DeLorean from 'Back to the Future'.

The new Kia Niro is the real time machine, but adjusted to anticipate just enough the changes (some radical) that the mobility of the next few years will reserve for us.

Completely redesigned compared to the recent first generation, Kia Niro Phev - subject of the ANSA Motori test - offers in fact all those solutions, such as the high efficiency plug-in hybrid propulsion, which serve to respond more precisely not only to the rules but also to the expectations of motorists who are increasingly sensitive to environmental protection.

The 'family' of the new Kia Niro now provides, thanks to the revision of the technological platform based on the third generation K architecture, only engines with low emissions - in the case of the electric hybrid (HEV) and the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) ) both equipped with the 4-cylinder 1.6-liter GDI - and with zero emissions, for the battery electric variant (BEV).

Central model in Kia's eco-friendly range, Niro BEV will be accompanied by a huge range of electric cars by 2027, to reach 14 models.

The extravagant scientist Emmett 'Doc' Brown from 'Back to the Future' would certainly like the high-tech powerplant from Niro Phev.

It is based on a four-cylinder thermal unit which develops a maximum power of 183 HP in combination with the 62 kW permanent magnet synchronous electric motor.

The 0-100 acceleration is achieved in 9.6 seconds and the top speed is 168 km / h.

The whole, thanks to numerous technologically advanced solutions, is able to offer an electric range of up to 59 km (in the WLTP cycle, with 18-inch wheels) which is a value - found that in our test - ideal for the great part of the daily commute including beautiful 'commuters' home - office - home.

Among other things, Niro Phev has an air conditioning system that uses Hyundai Motor Group's first 5.5 kWh high-voltage positive temperature coefficient (PTC) radiator.

Developed for plug-in hybrid models with the aim of increasing the electric range in the coldest environmental conditions.

The presence of ceramic elements guarantees a continuous flow of hot air, thus increasing the heating values in the passenger compartment.

Another very important element for obtaining superior environmental sustainability is the Green Zone intelligent driving system (also available in the Hev versions), which automatically engages driving in full electric mode, identifying the position of the Kia Niro through the navigation system.

The car passes by itself to pure electric driving, to reduce emissions to zero, when driving along urban areas or roads near schools and hospitals, designated as green and respectful areas.

It is however possible to enter the Green Zone mode autonomously also in other areas, at the driver's discretion (for example by entering a supermarket car park or home garage).

    But that is not all.

Many other features of the new generation Kia Niro are appreciated, not least of which the ratio - still improved - between external dimensions and habitability.

4,420 mm long, 1,825 mm wide and 1,570 mm high, it can now exploit (thanks to the K platform) a wheelbase of 2,720 mm and, consequently, new internal proportions that reward comfort, space and load capacity.

A more than positive judgment that for the premium level (materials, configuration and equipment) of the passenger compartment, this 'theme' that marks one of the most interesting increases for the new generation of Niro.

Among other things, the increase in the overall interior space and the improvements in terms of ergonomics have made it possible to obtain a better habitability so as to have allowed the

insertion of a relaxation seat for the passenger.

When the vehicle is stationary (for safety reasons), by pressing a button the right seat lifts and reclines as in the business class of aircraft.

There is now more space for rear passengers and each seat is equipped with USB-C sockets to recharge the electronic devices, confirming that the new Niro is no longer a mere means of transport but a functional extension of the living space.

Beautiful and functional, the double screen consisting of two 10.25-inch displays show information about the vehicle and navigation, while the second controls take advantage of a central multimodal touch display, minimizing distractions.

And when it comes to safety, it cannot be overlooked that the second generation Niro offers Kia's complete DriveWise package of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).

Prominent is the Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) which warns and stops the vehicle in case of danger of collisions with other road users or pedestrians.

It includes the function of turning and crossing junctions that stop the car during the left turn if it recognizes the arrival of another vehicle from the opposite direction.

The Remote Smart Parking Assist (RSPA) is very useful in parking in confined spaces, which allows you to get out of the vehicle - which will complete the parking by itself - before the end of the maneuver.

Prices for Niro Phev starting from 41,000 euros for the Style set-up.
