Mazda? Hyundai? Toyota? Kia? Which are the cars that Israelis buy the most?

We know who you chose

Parties come and go, lies and spin change, but in one area Israelis have a very clear voting pattern - the cars they buy.

Except for two very big surprises

Who is the car that the Israelis are pointing to with their wallets? (Photo: Image processing, Kenan Cohen, manufacturer)

Like parties and politicians, even the normal cars, the ones we buy in larger numbers, are supposed to serve us in the end.

Like parties and politicians, they also promise us that if we choose them they will do everything for us.

Like parties and politicians, there are quite a few people who have discovered that behind the big words, after they are chosen we will mostly encounter severe credibility problems and we will just wait for the opportunity to replace them.

With the help of Amir Weinstock, the data wizard and founder of the "Carzon" website, we set out to check which were the cars that year after year received the most votes from the Israelis.

Those who have won the most trust from the people over the past 12 years.

But there is an interesting twist here.

While in the years 2010-2016 only the figure of the total number of cars was recorded in the records of the Ministry of Transport.

From 2017 it is possible to segment the total annual sales with one significant cut - what was the share of sales to individuals.

In other words, who did the Israelis choose when it's the money that comes out of their pockets, and not the figures of the previous years which were mostly distorted by the sales to the institutional market - where what is mainly determined is the amount of the discount from the list price.

2010 - 2011 - Mazda era

With 21,608 thousand pieces in 2010 Mazda 3 expressed the concept of "sales queen" best and for the last time.

And just to understand how dominant it was, let's mention two elements - none since then even come close to this number, and the car in second place, the Toyota Corolla sold 13,678 cars in 2010, and the Hyundai i30 in 3rd place with 11,916 units.

But the reason for this dominance wasn't the handling, fuel economy, equipment, safety or comfort - it, along with all the cars after it on this list simply cracked its way into the heart of the institutional market.

The cars further down this list, without exception, all aimed there.

And the list goes on, with the Hyundai i20, Hyundai Accent, Ford Focus, Mazda 2, Chevrolet Cruze and Renault Fluence - all classic fleet cars.

"This is also the last time we see Renault in the top ten of the car" says Weinstock "and in general,

2011 didn't bring much change, Mazda 3 still leads with Corolla and i30 behind it.

But two points are worth noting this year - the first is the start of the marketing of the Ford Focus in its third generation, in which it begins its climb to the top (we will return to this later) and the second is the car that appears in the 9th place - a small, unpretentious, cheap mini car (also at its price) called Suzuki Alto.

It was the model that heralded the massive penetration of mini cars into the local market in the following years.

2012 - the year of focus

The image damage was not simple (Photo: Nir Ben Tovim)

After two excellent generations that were a benchmark for road behavior, the third generation of Ford Focus arrives.

Still fun to drive and the driver's choice, but less so than previous generations.

But that's not what was important here.

Riding on the waves of success of the previous generations and under the wings of Delek Motors, which dominated the institutional market with a firm hand, it is taking the top of the charts by storm again, with numbers that have hardly been seen since - 15,805 pieces of its three body configurations, station wagon, sedan and hatchback.

Further on the list, Toyota Corolla is consistently in second place, Hyundai replaces the i30 with the i35 (Elantra) in third place and with the i20 in fourth place.

And the interesting novelty is in fifth place, Kia's first entry into the local cutting-edge group and with the Picanto, another representative of the emerging mini segment.

Mazda 3, the queen of the market this time is already in 8th place and is fading into the darkness.

Rounding out the top ten is an elite European representative in the form of the Skoda Octavia, which will continue to star here for many years to come.

2013 - Mini fashion

The seeds of the sexual revolution (Photo: Nir Ben Tovim)

What started with the glimmer of the Indian Suzuki Alto, continued to fifth place the year before, became a fait accompli in 2013 - the mini cars found a warm home among Israelis as a car that closes the corner as a rental car, the car for junior salespeople or the ultimate solution for the second or third car at home.

9,660 units was enough to put it in first place when once again, as usual, Toyota Corolla is in second place, this time with 9,324 units.

The retired market queen Ford Focus is already in third place and that's really not the worst part yet to come.

From there in places 4-6 a trio of Hyundai (i30, i35 and i20 in that order).

Also on the list is the Octavia, which improves positions and climbs one place, while the next one closes the top ten opened by the Kia Picanto, another Kia - this time the Rio.

2014 - Corolla Power

While the first place in the table goes from hand to hand and from side to side, the Toyota Corolla sat for years in second place, going up and down with the market, but always there.

In 2014, it leaps forward and takes the title of the best-selling car in Israel - 13,728 cars.

It swaps places with the Picanto, which is in second place (not for much longer) and in third place is an old new guest - the Mazda 3. The car that did not enter the top ten last year returns - returns as a replacement player for someone who has been deleted from the game in the meantime - the Focus.

Finishing and gear faults made this car an allotment out of disgust.

It was an image blow from which she has trouble recovering to this day.

The fourth place belongs to Octavia, which from now on will be the most dominant European brand in the market.

Hyundai rolls out four models, continuing to establish the status of Koreans as the new Japanese.

New faces at the top of the market are registered with the Suzuki Crossover in the surprising 7th place.

2015 - Air Psagot

The revolution of crossovers and jeepneys did not begin in 2015, but this year, with the entry of two models that will become iron sheep assets in the market to the opening ten, these are the Mitsubishi Outlander and the Kia Sportage, with these two we can mark the first significant teething in the market and with it the locking of the jaws We have not really freed ourselves from it to this day and relaxation is not in sight.

While in first and second place, the Kia Picanto and Toyota Corolla continue to sit on each other's bum - the Kia Sportage bursts into third place, riding on the waves of sympathy for its image and a cheap and attractive accessory package without compromising on safety systems.

Mitsubishi Outlander with a 7-seater option at a very good price is in fourth place, Octavia in fifth place, followed by Mazda 3 and from there on down are Hyundai i10 and Elantra, Suzuki Crossover and Hyundai Accent.

2016 - mini and crutches

In this year, the two most prominent trends of the four years preceding it came together.

Of the five best-selling cars in the local market, three are crossovers/Jeeps (Sportage in first place, Tucson in third place and Mitsubishi Outlander in fifth place). The places in between are occupied by the Picanto in second place and Corolla in fourth place.

In fifth place, of course, the European representative in this table - Skoda Octavia.

The Mazda 3 is still showing vital signs with sixth place, but this is the last time this manufacturer is in the rankings.

And the rest of the table from 7th place onwards are only Hyundai models (Accent, Elantra and i10).

2017 - The public had its say

Starting this year, in which the classification of whether it is a private or a company vehicle was added to the registration of the model in the databases of the Ministry of Transport, we are moving to a more accurate count.

That is, a count that shows the best-selling models for the private customer.

The one who pays out of pocket for the car.

This is a more accurate indication of the preferences of the Israeli customer, not of the pea-counters in the leasing companies and vehicle fleets.

Among the most notable changes - neutralization of all the car "irons" that played in the vehicle fleets, but the private customers removed their legs from them.

And so, in the top ten, there is no mention of the Hyundai Elantra, the Corolla, the i10 or the i30, there is no Mazda 3, nor the Skoda Octavia.

Who is there?

In first place Hyundai Tucson, two Kia Sportage, Picanto, Suzuki Crossover, Hyundai i10, Ibiza, Toyota CHR, Yaris, Outlander and Suzuki Baleno.

That means 4 jeeps/crossovers plus one borderline (Suzuki crossover), while the rest are small or relatively cheap cars.

In other words, the Israeli customer buys C

2018 - the trend is in full swing

The names may be slightly different, but the direction is the same.

Kia Picanto returns to lead the table, but like last year, it's a few hundred cars, 500 at the most that separate one model from another.

Below it is a succession of crossovers/Jeeps - Tucson, CHR, Sportage, Suzuki Crossover, Kia Niro.

Only Toyota Yaris breaks this streak in 7th place.

It is followed by two other small cars in the form of the Hyundai i10 Seat Ibiza in the eighth and ninth places and the list is closed by the Subaru XV, "more or less the first visit of the Japanese manufacturer under the dialing area of a bestseller since the 1990s or so," Wishstock notes.

2019 - Return of the Corolla

So after a few years of being parked and in demand as used, but not really as a new car among private customers, Toyota Corolla is presented in a new generation.

Completely new and much improved from its predecessor and as a very successful vehicle.

No longer a box that needs to get from place to place with maximum efficiency and minimum excitement.

The public returns to pulling out wallets.

Toyota Corolla leads the market, followed by two other Toyota models - Rab 4 and CHR, to the joy of the importer.

From there on these are all the names we know: Picanto, Tucson, Sportage, Yaris, i10, Sotnik and Niro.

This list is probably the summation of what an Israeli is looking for in his car "They like their car Japanese or Korean, and preferably not complicated technologically" says Amir Weinstock, "In general, note that Hyundai Kia and Toyota are in all of them except for 2010)

Sales table 2019 (photo: screenshot, screenshot)

2020 - Toyota Land

Global epidemic or not, the Israelis focused their demand in 2020 on only three brands.

Toyota, Kia and Hyundai.

Corolla and Rab4 in the first two places.

Picanto fades to third and then another pair in fourth and fifth with the CHR and Harris.

Hyundai wound up fifth and tenth with Tucson and Kona respectively.

And whoever thought that in the absence of car fleets there would be no place for Skoda, well, actually yes, and what's more with a car that is not cheap at all - here is the Kodiak.

Below it are two more Kia models - Niro and Sportage.

By the way, a word about the purchases of Israeli private customers in the year of Corona - while the vehicle fleets were significantly affected - the private customers did not really disappear from the dealerships.

If in 2019 a total of 118,659 cars were sold to individuals, in 2020 112,238 units were sold, a marginal decrease compared to the global upheaval.

2021 - electric market

The Israelis recognized the excellent deal and pounced (Photo: SH)

With a shocking entry at the beginning of the year, Tesla became the official refresher of the Israeli car market in 2021.

At about NIS 180,000, it was an entry at a lower price than expected, true, the beginning was a little faltering, true, there were quality gaps in some of the first units that landed here - but the Israelis who spotted a deal like it hadn't really been here and it's hard to see how it comes back.

And of course the hype and buzz around the company didn't interfere too much.

A little more than 6,000 pieces of Model 3 in its three versions were registered here, making it not only the first streetcar to become the best-selling in Israel, but also the strongest entry of a brand ever into the local market.

Under Tesla - business as usual: Toyota issues the hit series - Corolla, Rav4, CHR.

Respite Picanto in fifth place and again Toyota Yaris.

From there on, these are the Hyundai Tucson, a new representative for Kia - the Celtus, then the Nero, and closing the list is the Mitsubishi Outlander - a respectable figure for a model that was then in the twilight of its life.

2022 - Wear and tear stock

As things stand at the time of writing these lines - the end of October 2022 - what is driving the Israeli market is mainly the global chip crisis.

And although the fever of buying new cars in Israel has not yet subsided, what logic and traffic jams do not do, the chip crisis and production difficulties do.

And yet, as far as the players in the top ten are concerned, these are names that we roll throughout this article, but there are some dramas - for the first time ever, the Corolla is not in the top five, but in 10th place.

But let's go back to the beginning - the one who sits in first place this time is a new representative of the Toyota Yaris Cross - also a Toyota, also small, also with a hybrid drive.

Tucson in second place, a draft Rab4 in third place and then again an electric surprise - Geely Geometric C - a new entry from an unknown Chinese manufacturer for Mr. Israeli and another with a not really popular drive (yet).

A combination of a good product, generous accessories, a useful range and at a price where we had not seen an electric crossover until then did their job.

The lack of crash tests didn't deter customers either.

The rest of the list?

Kia Seltos, Picanto, Hyundai Kona, Kia Stonic and Sportage and Corolla as mentioned closes the list.

Will these numbers change in the two months remaining until the end of the year?

It is highly likely that we will see fluctuations one way or the other, mainly because the gaps are several hundred cars and because, as mentioned at the moment, electricity or gasoline, what drives the tools on the board is full and not engines.
