Nasa capsule "Orion" on the moon: Very close and once around

2022-11-22T17:31:09.429Z

A Nasa space capsule has orbited the moon and has come as close to it as no spaceship has in a long time. "Orion" is set to set a new record next Monday.

"Orion will complete its closest approach at a distance of 81 miles from the lunar surface."

81 miles above the lunar surface, so about 130 kilometers.

A spaceship has not come this close to the celestial body for 50 years.

But the unmanned "Orion" capsule of the Nasa moon mission "Artemis" has now succeeded in this approach.

There are no pictures of exactly this moment, here "Orion" is much further away.

Instead, an animation shows the approach.

Because it took place when the capsule flew past the far side of the moon and there was no communication link with Earth.

"We expect to get the signal back in 15 minutes and 15 seconds."

The start of the mission had been repeatedly postponed for months.

It all started last Wednesday.

“3… 2… 1… boosters and ignition.

And launch of Artemis 1. We'll rise together, back to the moon and beyond."

From NASA's point of view, this was just the beginning.

The authority promises a new era of space travel in big words.

Bob Cabana, Nasa:

»We will inspire a whole new generation, the »Artemis« generation.

And this time it won't just be about a group of white military test pilots, we'll all go into space as one.

We're going to put the first woman on the moon, the first person of color.

Everyone will be integrated.

We will I think inspire a new generation and the difference is we don't fly there for a two or three day trip.

We want to embark on a sustainable path, with longer stays on the lunar surface.

We will use the surface of the moon.«

So a lunar base is supposed to be here.

And according to a Nasa manager, colonization should take place by 2030.

First of all, however, there are new destinations on this excursion into space.

Next Monday, "Orion" is expected to reach a maximum distance of almost 270,000 miles from Earth, almost 435,000 kilometers.

A NASA spacecraft has never been so far from Earth.

The capsule is finally scheduled to land in the Pacific on December 11th.

An orbit of the moon with people on board is planned for 2024, and a year later people will land on the moon again for the first time since 1972, with the SpaceX spacecraft.

And then, as promised, a woman and a non-white person will be there for the first time.
