Sometimes nothing works in winter without snow chains.
However, they are only mandatory if a traffic sign indicates them.
Every season presents drivers with their very own challenges, and this is no different in winter.
It is not without reason that there is a situational winter tire obligation in Germany.
The situation is different with snow chains, which can also be useful depending on the weather.
There is no general obligation to put snow chains on winter tires in Germany.
Unless the traffic sign 268 - a tire with chains on a blue background - is on the side of the road, then you can only continue with the aid.
Even if it is a four-wheel drive car.
If you continue without a ticket, you risk a fine of 20 euros.
However, snow chains are not a substitute for winter tires.
Driving in winter: Snow chains are not mandatory - with one exception
“It is ideal to first fit the snow chains 'in the dry'.
In the hustle and z.
For example, putting snow chains on for the first time in heavy snowfall carries the risk of incorrect installation or damage to the chain or vehicle,” advises the
ADAC
on its website.
Unlike winter tires, snow chains are not mandatory.

The snow chains always belong on the wheels on the drive axle.
If it is a four-wheel drive car, the chains must be applied to at least two wheels on a drive axle.
More detailed information can be found in the operating instructions.
The
ADAC
also recommends providing all axles with the traction aid.
Driving in winter: ADAC recommends installing snow chains early on
But how are snow chains fitted and what do drivers have to watch out for?
The
ADAC
recommends installing the traction aid at an early stage: "If you approach e.g.
B. a snow-covered pass, you should look for a level, remote assembly site, put on the safety vest and, if necessary, switch on the hazard warning lights.
You should remove the snow around the tire contact patch so that the chain and fasteners remain clean during assembly.”

The snow chain is then placed over the tire in accordance with the assembly instructions.
In the second step, the car is often moved a few meters to fully apply the chain.
Then the chain is closed, it is important to pay attention to the correct tension.
If it is too loose, it could hit and cause damage to the car.
If it is too tight, it could tear, which would also result in damage.
"A snow chain is correctly tensioned if it lies continuously on the road in front of the tire contact area while driving," explains the ADAC, emphasizing that it should be checked again after 100 meters.
Driving in winter: Only 50 km/h are permitted with snow chains
Before driving with snow chains, it is also advisable to take another look at the manual.
There you will find driving tips and settings – e.g.
B. the traction control - the vehicle manufacturer.
There may even be a special driving program for driving with snow chains.

As with the rear fog light in autumn, there is also a maximum speed for snow chains: more than 50 km/h are not permitted.
If it becomes loud or restless, the tension of the chains should be checked.
As soon as the roads are free of snow and ice, the traction aid has to be lowered again, otherwise the chains and road surface will be damaged.
Driving in winter: Clean snow chains properly after use
It is also important that not every snow chain can be used with every winter tire.
Therefore, when buying tires, you should pay attention to the tire dimensions recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.
Then the chains provided will also fit.

“As alternatives to the classic metal chain, there are chains made of plastic mesh, spikes and sprays for better grip on ice and snow.
However, classic snow chains are the best all-rounders and are sufficiently wear-resistant,” emphasizes the automobile club.
To ensure that the chains last as long as possible, they should be rinsed thoroughly with clear water after use and placed dry in the packaging.
Discontinue use of worn chains unless they can be turned.
