Tinted windows make many a car look smarter - but if you want to lend a hand yourself, you should pay attention to a few things.

Many a new car comes to the customer with tinted windows ex works.

Many buyers just like the look.

But tinting also has other advantages: the interior no longer heats up as much - and you don't have to resort to as much extra cooling measures, especially in summer.

And: The occupants are less dazzled and, on top of that, privacy is increased.

There are only two options for subsequent tinting: Replacing the panes with tinted lenses – which, however, is extremely expensive.

As a rule, the means of choice is a tinted film.

However, not everything is allowed with foiling - as with the application of normal stickers.

In principle, the windshield and the front side windows are taboo when tinting.

The view must not be restricted here.

According to ADAC, all side windows from the B-pillar and the rear window are permitted for window tinting if exterior mirrors are attached to the left and right of the car.

In addition, a maximum ten centimeter wide tinted strip may be attached to the upper edge of the windscreen.

A tinted film may only be applied to car windows from the B-pillar upwards.

Tinting windows: Foils must have general type approval

Important: Don't just buy some dark foil in the nearest hobby shop or hardware store and stick it on the pane.

There are clear legal requirements.

Only tinted films that have a general type approval (ABG) may be used.

The test number of the film must be visible on each pane.

Incidentally, you should also be careful if you want to polish your headlights - a cosmetic correction on your own can cost the TÜV.

Tinting windows: it's better to leave the foiling to a professional

In principle, you can tint your windows yourself - but if you have no experience with this, or are particularly skilled in manual work, it is better to leave this work to a professional.

This costs a little more at a specialist company - but you can expect a correspondingly error-free result.

Anyone who tints their windows improperly must expect a fine of at least 10 euros.

If this affects traffic safety, you may even have to pay 90 euros and one point in Flensburg.

Of course, the prices for a foil differ depending on the provider and the scope.

Prices start at around 150 euros for a small car – at least twice that is usually due for an SUV or van.
