The penalty, in the amount of 275 million dollars, joins fines of more than 500 thousand dollars from last year • Meta said that they changed the policy to prevent such cases • but did not say at this time if they will appeal the fine

The technology giant Meta was fined today (Monday) approximately 275 million dollars, for violating European privacy laws.

According to the regulator, a data leak discovered last year led to the publication of personal information of more than 500 million Facebook users on the Internet.

The penalty, imposed by Ireland's Data Protection Commission, brings the total fines the regulator has levied on Meta since last year to more than $900 million.

Last October, the Irish authorities fined Facebook approximately $235 million for violations related to its WhatsApp messaging service.

But Meta is not alone: last year Amazon was fined almost 750 million euros for violating privacy protection rules.

In January, Google was fined 90 million euros by French regulators for violations related to the collection of YouTube users' data.

The fine is the product of an investigation that began last year, when reports emerged that Facebook did not protect its platform from "scraping" data, which led hackers to publish data that included user names, locations and dates of birth, in violation of rules requiring companies to maintain personal information.

The company has yet to say whether they will appeal.
