They are timeless classics - regardless of whether they have long been part of the car's history or are still in production.

Here are the ten most-built cars of all time.

1 / 1010th place: BMW 3 Series.

BMW's popular middle class has been built 16 million times since 1975 - in several body variants such as the station wagon Touring shown in the photo, and also as a convertible.

The seventh generation of the BMW 3 Series is currently being produced and will soon be fully electrified.

So the success story can continue.

2 / 10Ninth place: Ford Model T. Long history, but with 16.5 million units produced still in the all-time top 10. The "Tin Lizzie" introduced in 1908 started series production in 1910 on the world's first assembly line, and just kept up few modifications (which also included a tank) and the mono color black until 1927.

3 / 108th place: Lada 1200. Or Zhiguli.

Or VAZ 2101. The classic Russian (or Soviet) passenger car went by many names and from 1966 to 2007 it sold 17.3 million units.

It was based on the Fiat 124, but featured a sturdier body and less comfort.

4 / 107th place: Toyota Hilux.

The pick-up truck is particularly popular in the USA, which is now enough for more than 18 million units built and sold.

Since 1968, its drivers have valued it as a robust all-road vehicle, on whose platform African warlords sometimes install a machine gun.

The eighth generation is currently on the way.

5 / 106th place: VW Beetle.

Around 21.5 million VW 1200s and other versions were produced, until the VW Golf changed the guard, the original Beetle was the bestseller in this country – but also popular all over the world.

Developed from the KdF-Wagen developed in 1938 for the Nazi Reich, the VW was still being produced in Mexico in 2003.

6 / 105th place: Honda Civic.

Just another VW Golf opponent in Europe, this compact car has been a mega seller in the US and Japan for decades.

Over 27.5 million units have been produced since 1972, and the eleventh generation is currently in dealerships.

7 / 104th place: VW Passat.

Perhaps a little surprising, but since its debut in 1973, the well-behaved mid-range car has sold more than 30 million units - albeit including the significantly different US version.

In Europe, the station wagon variant clearly dominates, the ninth generation from 2023 will no longer exist as a notchback.

8 / 103rd place: VW Golf.

Even if what feels like the eternal favorite of the Germans is currently struggling against Tesla and its internal competitor T-Roc: you have to get past the more than 35 million cars produced since 1974.

However, it is uncertain whether the current eighth generation will have a successor.

As an electric ID.

Golf, the epitome of the compact car, could still live on.

9 / 102nd place: Ford F-Series.

In the USA, the Ford F-150 pick-up truck has become an integral part of the street scene, he and his even bigger F-brothers perfectly embody the American way of driving.

The electric Lightning version brings more traffic to the commercial and lifestyle truck, which has been built more than 40 million times since 1948.

10 / 101st place: Toyota Corolla.

What the VW Golf is to the Germans, the Toyota Corolla is to the Americans, Japanese and many Europeans.

Over 50 million of these compact cars have been built since 1966, and its twelfth generation is now also available as a cross version.

However, the maximum of electrification is a plug-in hybrid.

From VW Beetle to Ford Model T: The ranking of the most built cars in the world includes some absolute superstars of vehicle history, but also one or two surprises.

Bad luck for brands that have been producing mega sellers for decades, but change their sales name one or more times in between, and therefore do not appear in this hit list.

Other models that have written automotive history are still being sold in their latest generation, but their end seems to be sealed in the foreseeable future in the course of electrification.

And on the other hand, it will probably be a few more years, if not decades, before electric cars appear in this eternal count.
