Tennis: Paralympic champion Nicolas Peifer sentenced for "sexual harassment"

He received a six-month suspended prison sentence for sexual harassment of a minor under the age of 15. His lawyer has announced that he is appealing the decision.

The double Paralympic wheelchair tennis champion Nicolas Peifer was sentenced Monday by the court of Sarreguemines (Moselle) to six months in prison suspended for sexual harassment of a minor under 15 years old.

The judges followed the requisitions of the prosecution, which had requested the reclassification of the facts as "sexual harassment".

Nicolas Peifer was initially prosecuted for "sexual proposal made to a minor under 15 by electronic means".

Messages exchanged between 2016 and 2018

“I am flabbergasted by this decision.

We are going to appeal, ”reacted to AFP Nicolas Peifer's lawyer, Me Martial Gagneux.

“The basic prevention was disqualified by the court, it is already that it did not hold water.

And on the facts of harassment, I do not see where there was harassment, except to consider that the fact of sending messages to someone, and not sending any more when you are asked, is constitutive of harassment .

This is for me a serious distortion of the law,” he added.

During the trial in October, Me Gagneux denied the existence of a criminal offense, while acknowledging that his client had exchanged messages with the victim, a civil party, between 2016 and 2018.

Originally from Sarreguemines, Nicolas Peifer won gold in doubles at the Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, then at those of Tokyo-2020 (which were held in August 2021 because of the Covid-19 pandemic), the twice alongside Stéphane Houdet.
