Does your car already know how to do a recall? - Walla! vehicle

This week, Geely summoned 5,000 electric cars to the garage for a software update, fearing that they would brake unnecessarily. But more and more cars, especially electric ones, are already arriving in Israel with the ability to update software

Ability to remotely update software OTA in Mercedes models (Mercedes)

This week importer Geely announced a major revision call for the Electric Geometry C.

About 5,000 cars manufactured between July 20, 2021 and September 26, 2022 were called to the garage for a software update.

According to the manufacturer, a concern arose that in rare cases when slowing down while driving on a slope, when the battery is almost fully charged, the software in the battery control unit (BMS) could cause a warning light to be activated and the power to be limited, which would lead to a gradual deceleration to the point of a complete stop of the vehicle.

The call includes 83% of the Geely models that drive in Israel, and everyone who comes to the garage will receive, as is customary today, additional non-safety software updates for the multimedia systems, the climate control, the voltage converter and more, which include additional features and improved usability.

As with any recall, a vehicle owner who does not come to the garage to perform it, even if it is only a software update, his vehicle will be blocked in the Licensing Office computer for ownership transfer and test.

Recalls are now a routine matter, which actually illustrates that the manufacturer is following up on vehicle malfunctions and dealing with them.

But what is starting to become less routine is a visit to the garage for a software update, not only as part of a service call, but also to add capabilities and improve existing functions.

More and more cars today are equipped with the ability to perform software updates remotely, without the need to waste time physically arriving at the garage.

Tesla was the first to bring the OTA system: software updates Over The Air, via cellular communication, to the conservative auto industry.

The industry squealed that this was a safety risk, and an irresponsible move, which could expose the cars to hacker attacks and technical problems.

But the only thing that happened is that Tesla owners got used to getting up in the morning and finding out that Elon Musk had again changed something for them on the operating screen, added capabilities and updated interfaces.

The vast majority of updates are not safe at all.

Car manufacturers have also started offering remote upgrades.

Tesla was the first to allow its customers to purchase additional performance, upgrade autonomous capabilities and "add" heating to the seat, a capability that the car already had when it left the production line, but required some cars to pay an additional fee for opening the software that allows this capability to be used.

BMW and Audi already offer such upgrades themselves in Europe, although like Tesla, not yet in Israel.

Mercedes, which made remote updating a standard in its models back in 2020, will launch the capability in Israel before them, in 2023.

Since then, other car manufacturers have also adopted the technology for their streetcars.

Gasoline, diesel and hybrid cars are still launched with a charge to go to the garage to receive such updates, as part of the annual car service.

But surprisingly, even many of the trams launched in Israel this year still do not include the capabilities, or they are technically present in them, but will only be offered later, according to the considerations of the manufacturers, the degree of readiness of the importers, and their preparation for the move.

Those who show greater readiness for the new technology are the Chinese manufacturers: most of them already offer the capability in Israel, or will enable it next year.
