A rare occultation easily visible to the naked eye in conjunction with the first light of dawn.

In view of the event, at 18:30 on 7 December the online show 'Mars against the Moon', organized by the National Institute of Astrophysics (Inaf), instead from 5 in the morning on 8 the live broadcast with the Virtual Telescope, both in also live on ANSA's Science and Technology channel.

"It will be an unmissable show, very beautiful and evident, easy to identify and clearly visible to the naked eye", commented Paolo Volpini, of the Italian Amateur Astronomers Union (Uai).

The occultation of Mars scheduled for tomorrow's dawn consists in the passage of the Moon which for a few minutes will cover the view of the planet Mars, a rather rare phenomenon which will be enhanced by two further coincidences: the full Moon and the maximum brightness of Mars which it is found these days in opposition and at the minimum distance from the Earth.

The beginning of the occultation will depend on the place of observation - from Milan at 6:10, Rome 6:15, Palermo 6:20 - and will end after about 50/55 minutes when, after being 'erased', Mars will reappear in the sky. Obviously it will only be an apparent clash resulting from perspective, the Moon is in fact just 380 thousand kilometers from the Earth, while Mars, in this period, is about 80 million kilometers away.

Mars against the Moon, at 6.30 pm on 7 December the live broadcast of the Inaf

From 6.30 pm live broadcast of the last episode of the year of the series "The sky in the living room" with the show "Mars against the Moon".

The participation of the Inaf telescopes of Rome and Palermo is expected, which will observe (weather permitting) Mars and the Moon.

Among the topics of the evening, the present and future of Martian exploration, the possibility of life forms on the red planet and the inevitable celebration of the anniversary of the Apollo mission.
