Floods caused the death of a person in the night from Wednesday to Thursday in the Lisbon region hit by heavy rains, said the civil protection services.
“We deplore a fatal victim” aged “about 55 years old” who “was in a cellar which was flooded”, declared the commander of civil protection, André Fernandes, during a press conference.
He also called on the population to stay at home "during periods of intense rain".
The capital of Portugal has been placed on alert.

Several railway stations, metro stations, tunnels and roads in the capital have also been closed.
At the same time, more than a hundred people had to leave their homes temporarily following the heavy rains, the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority told the Portuguese newspaper, Diario de Noticias.
