Climate report podcast: In Garzweiler, wind turbines have to go so that lignite can be mined

How seriously does Germany take the climate crisis? A picture from North Rhine-Westphalia does not shed a good light on the energy transition. You can hear how the coal phase-out is progressing in the climate report.

How is the energy transition progressing in Germany?

In North Rhine-Westphalia, the RWE group is not only digging out the village of Lützerath in order to be able to mine lignite.

Eight wind turbines also have to make way for the opencast mine.

For local climate protectors, the dismantling of the wind turbines "cannot be outdone in terms of absurdity."

They protest against the demolition of the houses - and the wind turbines.

There is a simple explanation for the pictures from Lützerath: the phase-out of lignite has not been agreed until 2030.

Until then, it will be excavated.

At the request and according to the plan of Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck and State Chair Mona Neubaur - both from the Greens.

In the podcast, SPIEGEL editor Lukas Eberle warns: Lignite mining can hardly be reconciled with the climate goals that the government has set itself.

This is what it says in a report commissioned by the government itself.

The climate protectors also know him – and are announcing even more protests.
