What if the worst of the Covid-19 pandemic was soon behind us?
On Wednesday December 14, the World Health Organization (WHO) hoped that Covid-19 “
would no longer be a global health emergency
” in 2023, without however specifying a more precise deadline.

said its general manager Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
The WHO emergency committee on Covid-19 - the same one that advised on January 30, 2020 to declare an international public health emergency (USPPI) after some hesitation - will meet in early January 2023 to discuss the criteria for whether or not to establish the end of the health emergency.
The WHO defines a USPPI as an
“extraordinary event that is determined to pose a risk to public health in other states because of the international risk of disease spread and may require coordinated international action”
.
