States agree on global agreement on nature conservation at species protection conference in Montreal

There was a breakthrough at the species protection conference in Montreal: the states adopted an ambitious final document. Almost a third of the world is to be specially protected – by 2030.

A historic agreement was reached at the UN Conference on the Protection of Biological Diversity: after around two weeks of negotiations, the participants at the World Nature Summit in Montreal, Canada, agreed on a final declaration.

Among other things, the around 200 countries set themselves the goal of protecting at least 30 percent of the world’s land and sea areas by 2030.
