The trailer of the movie "Sabaya Cinema" (United King)
"Cinema Sabaya" by director Orit Fuchs Rotem, winner of the Ophir Award, did not qualify for the short list of candidates for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film - this was announced today (Wednesday).
The short list, which includes 15 films, will be reduced in the future to five that will compete for the prize.
Israel has not been nominated for an Oscar since "Footnote" a decade ago, and has not been on the short list since "Foxtrot" half a decade ago.
"Sabaya Cinema" is about nine women, Jewish and Arab, who work in Hadera Municipality, who meet in a workshop to study videography.
The young director Rona (played by Dana Ivegi), leads the workshop and teaches them how to document their world.
The film deals with issues such as independence, relationship, motherhood, freedom and sexual abuse.
The Jordanian representative "Fareha" - a film by director Darin G. Salam, which deals with the War of Independence and includes a scene depicting violence by Israeli soldiers, and caused a great uproar in Israel due to this - was also not included in the short list.
What is included in the list, among others, is the German war film "There is nothing new in the West", based on the cult book by Erich Maria Remarque, which is available for viewing on Netflix;
Iñárritu's Mexican "Bardo";
The Polish "EO", conducted through the eyes of a donkey;
The Danish "Holy Spider", the "blue kaftan" who represented Morocco and more.
The Indian hit "RRR", on the other hand, is not nominated because India preferred to submit another film on its behalf - "The Last Cinema Show", which actually entered the list - but it won nominations in other categories, for example the original song.
