Since the new taxi fares came into effect three years ago, the drivers have been complaining, to a large degree of justice, about the damage to their incomes.

But it turns out they have another income: tips.

Data from the Uber app obtained by Walla reveal that 80% of drivers received a tip from a passenger at least once in the past year.

On average, the passengers paid a tip in a quarter of the trips, and when the starting point was in Tbilisi - in a third of the trips.

The average tip was NIS 10, with the highest tip this year given for a taxi ride from Tbilisi to Jerusalem, and amounted to NIS 420, more than the price of the trip itself.

The highest tip in relation to the price of the trip was given for an 8-minute taxi ride in Acre: the price of the trip according to the meter was NIS 33, and the driver received a tip of NIS 100, 3 times.

Unlike the rest of the world, Uber operates in Israel today using only registered taxi drivers.

This is after its previous attempts to convince the Ministry of Transportation to change the law and allow private drivers in Israel to transport passengers for a fee, failed and even resulted in indictments against its former CEO Yoni Graifman and eight drivers, which ended in plea deals.

Allow payment to the driver also in cash

Half a year ago, the company announced a return to operations in Israel only in cooperation with licensed taxis.

Uber reports that since then thousands of taxi drivers in Israel have connected to its application, mainly in Gush Dan, Jerusalem, and Israel.

These are trips that attract many tourists, who are used to using Uber abroad, and who also use it for their trips in Israel.

An official from the taxi industry who was exposed to the data estimated that the fact that Uber has a higher proportion of tourists than the Get and Yango apps, increased the proportion of tips received by the drivers, thanks to the culture of leaving a tip for drivers abroad, which has not yet permeated the country.

And how do the Israelis compare to the tourists? Segmented by passengers In Uber Israel this year by country of origin, passengers from Uruguay were found to be the most generous, tipping an average of 24% of the meter price. Tourists from Ecuador ranked second (17.7%) and tourists from Norway a very close third (17.6%). And the Israelis? 15.1% only.

Uber emphasizes that leaving a tip is completely voluntary and subject to the passengers' choice, and that the tip

is transferred in full to the driver, without commission.

Passengers who choose to add a tip can do so during

the trip or at the end, while the driver is informed of the tip he received only after the trip is completed.

Uber announced this month that it will now add the option to pay in cash for trips booked through the app in Israel.

Passengers who choose to pay in cash will continue to benefit from all the functions available in the app for passengers paying by credit.
