We all know that social media tailors posts to us according to our specific interests to expose us to addictive content.

This morning (Wednesday) TikTok launched a new function that will explain to users why they see a specific video in their feed - in a very detailed way.

The new update will start rolling out to users in Israel in the coming weeks.

The Chinese social network's algorithm works so that the content displayed in each user's feed is ranked through a combination of factors based on the user's activity in the application, taking into account topics that he indicated he was not interested in consuming.

"This feature is one of many avenues in which Tiktok works to bring transparency to the creator community, and is part of a number of steps taken for this purpose, for example, Tiktok publishes guidelines regarding content categories that are not eligible for recommendations, tools to help customize recommendations and educational resources that explain how they work The content recommendations on the platform," said a message on behalf of Tiktok.

According to the company, it intends to expand the feature even more in the near future, to provide more detail and transparency regarding the content recommendations in the application.

This is how it will work:

  • Clicking 'Share' on the 'For-You' page

  • Clicking on the question mark icon called "Why this video"

  • Getting a breakdown of the reasons for showing the video

Tik Tok's recommendation system is powered by technical models, and in detail about the video reasons such as user interactions will be shown (content the user watches, content marked with a like, content shared by the user, a user's response or a search within the application);

accounts that the user follows or accounts suggested for him;

Recently published content in the user's area and popular content in the user's area.
