The last day of 2022 promises to be extremely mild.
Like the whole year, the thermometer will show record temperatures.
8°C above seasonal norms
Recorded as the hottest year since the beginning of reliable meteorological records (around 1900), 2022 ends with temperatures around "
8° degrees above normal for the season
", says Régis Crépet, meteorologist at
The Weather Channel*
.
“
The mildest day will be that of December 31,
we will be exactly 8.4° C above on Saturday and 7.4° C on Sunday
”, continues the specialist.
21°C degrees in Bordeaux, 16°C in Paris or 18°C in Strasbourg.
But he prefers to remain cautious.
"
If these predictions come true, it would indeed be one of
the sweetest New Years Eves since
1947.
"
Other New Year's Eve had experienced the same temperatures, in 1989 and 1997. And this while Christmas has already been particularly mild.
"
This is the second mildest Christmas since the start of the indicator in 1947
," meteorologist François Gourand told AFP.
From sweetness to Eastern Europe
How to explain these temperatures?
As during the Christmas weekend, a southerly flow will settle in France: “
It's a combination of two fairly frequent phenomena, a depression over the Atlantic Ocean and an anticyclone over the Maghreb.
This generates southerly winds, which come up from Morocco and the Canaries.
These subtropical air masses rise over France, and even over all of Eastern Europe
”.

Other European countries are affected by this end-of-year mildness: "
It will affect as far as Central Europe, Benelux, Germany, Switzerland
".
Berlin temperatures will approach 13°C while Kiev will experience 11°C: “
These are remarkable temperatures
”.
The year of records
These meteorological anomalies follow on from a year that was itself exceptional.
"
It
's the hottest year ever recorded for France
, that's for sure
," says Régis Crépet.
The extremely hot summer had increased the averages considerably.
"
It would have taken an extremely cold winter to compensate for the heat wave
", argues the specialist.
Despite the first very cold weeks, this month of December could also be slightly above average - by one or two degrees.
Faster warming in Europe
Warming has been observed for several years in France.
If 2022 is the hottest on record, second place goes to 2020 and third to 2018. "
It's a glaring trend
," asserts the expert.
For England, it will certainly be the case too
.
“
In France, global warming is therefore very clear, and we can say that it is central Europe that is warming the fastest in the world
”.
The acceleration of temperatures on the Old Continent would be “
the fastest and most intense
”.
“
And in Europe, it is certainly France which is the most concerned
”, he adds.
On a global scale, this year 2022 will certainly be the fifth hottest on record.
