After a decrease due to the corona crisis, the number of victims in accidents involving drunk or drugged drivers has returned and increased.

The figures for 2022 have not yet been published, but in 2021 there was already a 75% jump in such incidents, while the number of fatalities jumped by 100% to 12 people.

416 people were injured in road accidents in 2021, compared to 238 in 2020.

In the last four years, 1,401 people were injured in accidents related to alcohol and drugs, 350 people each year on average, almost one victim every day.

The annual number of fatalities reached eight people on average, and the seriously injured 30, according to the CBS data processed by Or Yerok.

About half of the victims were private car drivers (53%) and about a third were car passengers (31%). 6% of the victims in alcohol-related accidents/ Drugs are drivers and passengers of motorcycles and scooters. 4% of victims are pedestrians, 1% were injured when they were riding bicycles.

From the analysis of the data by Green Green, it appears that 22% of the total number of drivers involved in alcohol-related accidents in 2018-2021 were young drivers - 46% higher than the share of license holders.

In 2011, the 0% alcohol law came into effect, prohibiting young drivers under the age of 24 from drinking alcohol and driving, not even a single glass of wine.

Therefore, those young drivers who were involved in accidents after drinking alcohol should not have gotten behind the wheel at all.

"Drunk driving is one of the most serious traffic offenses," explains attorney Yaniv Yaakov, CEO of the Or Yerok association.

"A person chooses to drink alcohol and get behind the wheel, thereby endangering the lives of all of us. In recent years, there has been an increase in accidents caused by drunk drivers, and it can be estimated that the lack of a massive and deterring police presence is the main reason for this - drivers are simply not afraid to drink alcohol and get behind the wheel because they understand that the chance It is very small that they will be caught. The increased enforcement on New Year's Eve is just a drop in the ocean. We must add more police officers and more mobiles that will be deployed all days of the week and will enforce against drunk drivers."

The highest number of victims: Fridays in Tel Aviv

417 people were injured in the last four years in traffic accidents related to alcohol or drugs on Fridays.

The second most dangerous day is Saturday (326 casualties), while Monday is the day with the most casualties, and also a day when few go out to spend time.

From the examination of the ten cities where the most drivers were involved in traffic accidents due to drunk/drugged driving, Tel Aviv comes first, with 36 casualties per year, before Jerusalem (18), Haifa (14), Petah Tikva and Rishon Lezion (10), Netanya (38), Ashdod (8), Holon (7), Bat Yam and Beer Sheva (6) and Ashkelon (5).
