Last year, funding for electric cars reached a record billion.

This is how high the environmental premium will be from now on.

Last year, Germany spent more money than ever before to promote cars with electric motors.

In 2022, around 3.2 billion euros went to buyers of around 640,000 vehicles.

The 3.1 billion euros with 625,260 subsidized vehicles from the previous record year 2021 were exceeded once again - despite sometimes very long delivery times, especially for electrified new cars.

The German state spent around 3.2 billion euros last year to promote electric cars.

The figures from the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (Bafa) include pure battery vehicles (BEV: Battery Electric Vehicle) as well as fuel cell cars (FCEV: Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle) and plug-in hybrids (PHEV: Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle). contain.

There will be no more government subsidies for the latter category in the coming year, and the subsidy premiums will also fall for purely electric cars with battery or hydrogen drives.

In the last few weeks of last year, this led to another run on the admissions offices, because the admission date alone is decisive for the amount of the subsidy.

Together with the high electricity prices, the lower subsidy could lead to a significant drop in registrations, expects auto expert Ferdinand Dudenhöffer.

Electric premium: From now on a maximum of 4,500 euros from the state

Buyers of fully electric cars will only receive a maximum of 4,500 euros from the state from 2023 instead of the previous 6,000 euros if their car is on the sales list for less than 40,000 euros net (or 47,600 euros gross).

For more expensive vehicles up to a net list price of up to 65,000 euros (77,350 euros net) there is still 3000 euros instead of the previous 5000 euros.

In 2024, the subsidy premiums will fall even further.

Around 1.64 million cars have been subsidized since the first electric bonuses were introduced in 2016.

A run on the subsidy pots began in mid-2020, when the purchase bonus that had been valid until then was increased by an “innovation bonus”.

Buyers could receive a bonus of up to 9,000 euros, two-thirds of which was borne by the state.
