The group is increasingly focusing on the digitization of its plants and also wants to produce only electric cars from 2026.
A change with consequences that are openly addressed at Mercedes.
Digitization in the automotive industry underestimated
In an interview with the "Deutsche Presse-Agentur" (dpa), Sabine Kohleisen, Head of Human Resources at Mercedes-Benz, spoke about a topic that the public underestimated for the automotive industry.
For them, in addition to electromobility,
“digitization is at least as historic a turning point, if not even more so”
Developments in the important Chinese market are putting pressure on companies like Mercedes, Audi and VW.
They need to move forward with their future plans.
And the increased production of e-cars is already bringing changes.
Plants in which the drive trains are produced are particularly affected, as Kohleisen explains to the “dpa”: “It will be the case that we will have fewer jobs at these locations.” The HR director did not name a specific number.

And digitization has further consequences at Mercedes.
The Stuttgart group sees this as a comprehensive change for the plants that affects all areas of the company.

Mercedes is cutting jobs at certain locations
A job cuts at Mercedes seems firmly planned.
With the statement by Sabine Kohleisen that today there is also full employment in the powertrain plants because combustion engines still play a large part in production, the requirement is clear, as BW24 also reports.
In the “dpa” report, she also makes it clear that it takes more people to produce an engine and transmission than to drive an electric vehicle.
Accordingly, the Mercedes board member sees major changes coming to the locations.
On the other hand, new products and technologies would also be brought to the production sites.
For this purpose, according to the article, Kohleisen had announced an offensive in further training in the summer of 2022.
By 2023, 1.3 billion euros are to be invested in Germany "to meet the challenges of the transformation".
Hiring plans at Mercedes for software developers
And Mercedes, according to its own statements, is already big steps further on the way to digitization.
The group has almost reached its goal of hiring 3,000 software developers worldwide.
2,300 are now on board, said Kohleisen.
The goal has been achieved at the Sindelfingen site, where 1,000 software developers are to be hired.
It goes on to say:
“A new overarching hiring target is currently not planned.
Top talent would of course continue to be hired.
In China, in particular, it is still being hired because special programs and software are needed there.
Now it's about training the hired staff and driving performance upwards."
