Many drivers often do not know the correct setting for the rear fog light and the fog lights.

The regulations for use are clear.

There are also fines for mistakes.

There are many new rules for drivers to observe in 2023, as

echo24.de

reported.

There are penalties and fines.

But there are also numerous specifications that do not change.

And especially in the winter months you should know and use a few settings on the vehicle correctly.

Many drivers like to use the high beam in poor weather conditions.

But they are wrong about that.

And it can also be dangerous under certain circumstances.

Many do not even know how and when to turn on the fog lights and rear fog lights.

Police warn drivers to use rear fog lights correctly

The Heilbronn police are also aware of the problem of having the right light at the right time.

In a post on Facebook, the Presidium warns of caution.

Drivers mistakenly rely on their vehicles' automatic headlights.

This puts them and other road users at risk.

The problem.

Drivers like to confuse fog lights with high beams.

The high beam impairs visibility immensely, especially in fog.

The "Allgemeine Deutscher Automobil-Club" (ADAC) also repeatedly points out: "In fog you should also do without high beam, it worsens visibility even more."

What does the fog light symbol look like?

Modern light automatic does not recognize fog, only darkness.

Drivers must therefore reach for the correct switch or turn the switch to the correct symbol.

In many models, the light switch is usually on the left, below the steering wheel.

In some cars, the switches can also be found directly on the steering wheel.

The setting for the rear fog lamp and fog lights can also be found directly on a lever on the steering wheel in some cars.

The rear fog lamp symbol is a semicircle with horizontal dashes to the right and a wavy line symbolizing fog.

When the light has been switched on, an indicator light will illuminate on the dashboard.

The light switch for the fog lights and tail light also has two stages in many cars.

Turn the light switch to the low beam sign, then pull the switch out one notch and the fog lights come on.

For example, motorists should use rear fog lights and headlights

Rules apply to the use of fog lights and rear fog lights.

Drivers should not use the lights indiscriminately.

The ADAC summarizes the legal requirements:

  • They can only be switched on if visibility is less than 50 meters due to fog

    amounts to.

If the lamp is used when visibility is better, following traffic will be dazzled.

  • With visibility below 50 meters

the legislature allows a maximum speed of 50 kilometers per hour.

In order to estimate the distance, you can use the delineators at the side of the road as a guide – they are set up at exactly this distance on country roads and motorways.

  • Rear fog lights are also allowed in urban areas

    be used.

  • There is no obligation to switch on rear fog lights.

  • Anyone who uses a rear fog light incorrectly must expect a fine of 20 euros.

If this endangers other road users or if an accident occurs, the fine is 25 or 35 euros.

General handling of drivers with the right light settings

The traffic experts also provide other important rules for the use of low beam, daytime running lights and automatic headlights.

It says:

“A significant visual impairment and thus the

obligation, that

dimmed headlights

According to case law, it is always necessary to switch it on when visibility on the motorway is less than 150 meters"

.

This regulation applies to roads outside built-up areas if visibility is less than 100 meters or 60 meters in built-up areas.

For daytime running lights, the fact that drivers may or must drive with daytime running lights is not regulated by law.

However, the ADAC explains that in autumn and winter the daytime running lights are usually not sufficient,

"because visibility is often poor during the day and the lights are only on the front of the vehicle"

.

Then, according to the report, "the driver must switch on the low beam".
