Jeff Beck, one of the greatest guitarists of all time, passed away at the age of 78. The musician passed away yesterday (Wednesday) but the announcement was made only this morning (Thursday Israel time).

According to the official announcement, the cause of sudden death is bacterial meningitis.

In an official statement on behalf of his family, it was said: "It is with great and deep sadness that we announce the death of Jeff Beck. He died peacefully. His family requests privacy as they digest this enormous loss."

Beck was born in London in 1944 and burst into consciousness in the mid-sixties as the lead guitarist of the Yardbirds.

He then had an illustrious solo career.

Over the years, he won five Grammy Awards and was ranked 14th on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.

His playing had a great influence on generations of musicians who were educated on his unique technique and used it in albums and performances.

At the beginning of the previous decade, Beck came to Israel and performed there twice.

Beck entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice - once with the Earbirds and the second time, in 2009, as a solo artist.

On this occasion he said "I play the way I do because it allows me to create the sickest sound there is. That's the point isn't it? I don't care about the rules. In fact, if I don't break the rules at least ten times in every song, I'm not doing my job right ".

As soon as word of Beck's death was published, the network was filled with obituaries.

Mick Jagger uploaded a joint photo and wrote "We lost a wonderful man and one of the best guitar players in the world. We will all miss him so much."

Rod Stewart did a similar thing and wrote "He was on his own planet. He was the greatest of them all. Thank you for everything."
