What happened to the Skywell ET5 in the crash test? - Walla! vehicle

In a crash test conducted for the Chinese Skywall ET5 electric crossover, low results were obtained in the protection of the vehicle's occupants and low performance of the safety systems

In the wave of Chinese cars that has washed over Israel's roads in recent years, the issue of the safety of these cars often remains a significant issue.

The fact that there is no prior knowledge of the manufacturers and their safety history leaves the figure of the results of the crash tests hanging in the air until such a recognized westerner is conducted for them.

In recent months we have already met several Chinese cars that were tested in the European crash test, also the strict one and they received excellent results of 5 stars.

Models such as the WEY Kopi 01 or BYD Auto 3 and also the Ora Funky Cat, whose marketing will begin here soon, are recent examples, while in the previous rounds it was the electric MG ZS that also received 5 safety stars.

Now, the results of the crash test conducted for another Skywall electric model are published in China.

There they call it EV6, but in the European markets and here, it is manufactured under full European standards, its name was changed to ET5 - in order not to market a model with the same name as a Kia streetcar.

And the results are not very encouraging.

The model received a single star out of a possible five, with an overall score of 39.9% while the average score for vehicles in this test is 71.6%.

Breaking it down into test sections, it received a low score of 38.45% in passenger protection, 61.46% in pedestrian protection and the advanced safety systems receive an even lower score of 30.26%.

For comparison, the average of the models tested in C-NCAP is in these sections at 69.7%, 69.2% and 73% respectively.

In the breakdown of the passenger protection scoring sections, while the protection of the front passengers' heads and necks in a frontal impact was good, the vehicle lost points for the protection of the chest, calf and thigh.

In the case of a side impact the score was even lower.

In rear seat passenger protection, head protection received good marks, but the neck and chest were significantly damaged.

However, the most problematic score was for small children in the back seat, where he was unable to register any score.

How relevant is this score to Israel?

After the first Chinese ones tested by the Euroencap showed poor results and horror videos, the Chinese authorities made the local crash test requirements much worse.

The Chinese girls who received 5 stars in Europe in recent months, previously achieved the same score in the Chinese test, which was found to be a good predictor of the results in Europe.

For example, following the raising of the C-NCAP test threshold and it is very close to the accepted European standard in EURO NCAP except for a number of differences such as the speed in the test that simulates a side impact, which is 50 km/h and not 60 as in the European test, or a slight difference of 20 instead 24 km/h in a "whiplash" type impact test (nickname for rear end impact by a vehicle).

The only reason for relief in the case of the Skywall is the mention of the advanced safety systems, which must be taken with a limited guarantee, since the Chinese model and the one marketed in Europe and Israel contain somewhat different safety systems.

According to the importer, the Israeli model is completely different (photo: Dodi Moskovitz)

The Kaduri Group, the importer of Skywell to Israel, stated: "The model that was tested, the skywell ev6 model, is sold only in the Chinese domestic market and is not exported to European countries, and it was also tested by a Chinese company that does not represent the Western world. It should be emphasized that the model that is imported to Israel, model skywell et5, is in compliance European (WVTA) complete and completely different from the model tested. According to the manufacturer, the model marketed in China is fundamentally different from the model exported abroad.

Emphasizing the safety specification and other aspects.

In China the vehicle is also sold with a smaller battery for example.

The model that arrives in Israel and Europe has passed full European standardization and will soon pass the crash tests in Europe as well."
