A day after surprisingly announcing its new Mac computers, Apple yesterday (Wednesday) launched another product without prior notice - the second generation HomePod, its smart speaker, which has a price tag of $299.
The first generation was announced in 2018, and three years later it was canceled and replaced by the HomePod Mini, which was sold at a significantly lower price tag.
The HomePod in the 2023 version comes with the same design as the first generation, with a fabric mesh cover in black or white colors that is made from 100% recycled material.
"Leveraging our expertise and innovations in audio, the new HomePod delivers rich, deep bass, a natural midrange and clear, detailed frequencies," said Greg Joswiak, senior vice president of global marketing at Apple.
"With the popularity of HomePod mini, we've seen growing interest in even more powerful acoustics that can be achieved in a larger HomePod. We're excited to bring the next generation of HomePod to customers around the world."
The speaker also includes Apple's S7 chip (as in the Apple Watch), MultiRoom support - the use of several units that can also be used as an internal intercom at home together with the various Apple devices, a 4-inch internal woofer, five internal speakers, Siri support, a meter Internal heat that will automatically activate the air conditioner and a smoke and toxic gas detector based on listening to alarms.

Another important detail is support for the new Matter standard - a uniform protocol for a smart home designed to allow diverse products to talk to each other.
A detailed guide on the device can be found in the article we published here last week.
The HomePod will be available for purchase in 11 countries - including Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain and the UK - starting February 3.
