This man of Dutch nationality rented an apartment above the town hall in the village of Chéniers, but lived very isolated from his neighbors.

An 85-year-old man was found dead on January 12 at his home in Chéniers, Creuse, six months after his death.

Of Dutch nationality, he had rented an apartment from the municipality for several years and only rarely left his home, explains France Bleu Creuse.

“He came, he paid, he left.

He didn't speak French and didn't try to communicate.

(…) It's sad to die alone, especially in the countryside,” testified the village grocer to the local radio.

He was said to have been "at odds with his family and had no friends among his neighbours".

The mayor of the town informed the firefighters

It was the mayor of the town who ended up noticing the "wilted flowers at his window" and the fact that he no longer came to the grocery store.

By taking stock of his financial services, Gilles Gaudon realized that the octogenarian had not paid his rent since July, which made him decide to call the fire brigade.

They then discovered the man's body.

Elected since 1983, the mayor of Chéniers admitted to our colleagues that he had never been confronted with such a situation.

“It happened to us to find deceased people, but maximum 72 hours later.

There was always a neighbor or an acquaintance to alert us,” he said.
