Exclusive: For the first time, together with the Carzone website, we ranked the car manufacturers according to the pollutant emission levels they sell in Israel

Auto brands regularly make headlines based on their sales figures, and publicly traded ones also for their business results.

But until today we have not seen their ranking based on a figure no less important to our lives: the air pollution created by the cars they choose to sell to Israel.

Today we are publishing for the first time such a week's rating, which was carried out by Amir Weinstock from the CARZONE website, which analyzes the data of the local automobile industry, also for automobile importers.

The ranking is based on the average green score for each of the car brands sold in Israel in 2022, and includes only the regular import data by the official importers, without the corresponding imports.

It should be noted that the State of Israel operates one of the most advanced car air pollution rating methods in the world, awarding a "green" score to each individual model, but refraining from rating each brand separately, which would represent the manufacturers' efforts to provide us with cars with as low a pollution emission level as possible from the exhaust.

Contrary to the emphasis that is generally placed in the world on the emission of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (co2), the Israeli rating divides each model sold in Israel into one of 15 pollution groups based on a complex formula, which is updated every two years, and also takes into account the emission of other gases, which are more dangerous to man and life: Nitrogen oxides (Nox), carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC) and particulate matter (PM).

The state performs the rating to determine what tax benefit, if any, each car will receive according to green taxation regulations, which allow a purchase tax discount of up to NIS 16,000 for gasoline and diesel vehicles, and tax benefits for electric and plug-in cars.

At the top of the brands that sell the most polluting cars are the pickup truck brand Isuzu, the American luxury brand Cadillac, and Nissan's luxury brand, Infiniti.

All the cars sold by all three are rated at the highest level of pollution, 15, they do not offer electric, hybrid or plug-in models in Israel.

Among them, Isuzu sold the largest amount of vehicles (1,615), which is why it is ahead of Cadillac (735) and Infiniti (135).

From the second past, the cleanest and greenest brands in Israel are those that sell only electric cars, which do not emit any pollutants from the exhaust, and even according to the way electricity is produced in Israel, 25% from coal, 10% from renewable energy and the rest from natural gas, still cleaner than the level of pollution created by hybrid cars and cars Plug in.

The list includes Geely, Tesla, BYD, Eways, Skywell, Maxus, Fiat, JAC and Polestar, with Geely, Tesla and BYD being the cleanest as they delivered the largest quantities of electric cars last year: 6,817 C models Yes, 6,044 Tesla models and 3,713 BYD crossovers.

MG also stands out on the list, which in the past year sold about 5,000 plug-in models and several dozen streetcars, and its average green score is 2, the closest to 100% streetcars.

Infiniti is also at the top of the polluting brands (photo: manufacturer's website, пресс-служба)

It is equally interesting to see where the Korean and Japanese brands sold in Israel are located, most of which combine sales of small quantities of electric vehicles and large quantities of hybrid vehicles, especially the three market leaders in the sales charts: Hyundai, Kia and Toyota.

Although Hyundai sold more electric cars last year (about 2,800) than Kia (402) and Toyota (86), Toyota, about 90% of its sales were of hybrid cars, turns out to be cleaner overall, with an average score of 5.2 compared to 8.2 for Hyundai and 9.6 to Kia.

Even in the luxury market, Toyota's luxury division, Lexus, is ahead of its German competitors, who sold far more electric cars, because more than 95% of the cars it sold in Israel in 2022 were hybrids.

Lexus has an average pollution score of 6.3 compared to 10.4 for Audi, 9.1 for Mercedes and 8.2 for L-M-W.

Only BMW's Mini division, which sells only small cars and crossovers, few of which are electric, achieves a better luxury score than Lexus, 5.1.

It should be noted that a different method was decided in Europe that encourages the manufacturers to sell as many electric cars as possible on the continent: they are required to reach a decreasing average of CO2 emissions, and those who do not comply can be fined billions of euros.

If until 2019 the required average was 130 grams of C02 per km, in 2021 it dropped to 95 grams, and fines began to be charged, in 2025 it will decrease by 15%, in 2030 by 55% of the current situation, and in 2035 Only the sale of electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles will be allowed on the continent. It is already cheaper for manufacturers to develop and produce electric cars than to pay heavy fines, or to purchase clean pollution credits from manufacturers who have surpluses thanks to the sale of a large amount of electric cars, such as Tesla.

The professional ranks in the Ministries of Environmental Protection, the Treasury, the Tax Authority and the Ministry of Transportation discussed last year the adoption of a similar outline in Israel as well, despite estimates that it might increase car prices.

Now we will have to see if the new government will also continue in the direction and move forward to approve the outline, which will force car manufacturers to allocate more electric cars to the Israeli market, at the expense of more polluting gasoline and diesel vehicles.
