Fuel prices at gas stations have risen significantly again.

Meanwhile, the price difference between petrol and diesel has fallen.

Actually, the trend in fuel prices at the end of 2022 went in the right direction from the perspective of drivers: namely downwards.

Diesel and petrol have been getting cheaper and cheaper for weeks.

However, prices picked up again just in time for the holidays and have been rising again ever since – with one small exception at the beginning of January.

Compared to the previous week, the fuel prices for diesel and Super E10 have increased significantly according to an analysis by the ADAC.

The rise in petrol was particularly drastic.

On average nationwide, a liter cost 1.779 euros, 4.2 cents more than last week.

Fuel prices in Germany: Drivers have to dig deeper into their pockets at the pumps

A liter of diesel costs an average of 1.858 euros nationwide.

The price increase of 2.9 cents was therefore somewhat lower than for the Super E10.

“Refueling was last more expensive than it is now at the end of November 2022,” explains the ADAC.

But there is one positive aspect: the price difference between the two types of fuel is somewhat reduced.

A liter of diesel now costs 7.9 cents more than petrol.

“However, normalization is not yet in sight.

The current price difference does not even begin to reflect the fact that there is a 20-cent reduction in energy tax on a liter of diesel,” emphasizes the ADAC, which still considers fuel prices to be significantly excessive.

Fuel prices in Germany: ADAC gives drivers savings tips

The automobile club justifies this assessment with the fact that the price for a barrel of Brent crude oil is at a similar level as in the previous week.

The euro has also appreciated again against the dollar.

"A month ago, when the price of oil was similar, Super E10 cost about ten cents less than now, diesel about six cents," writes the ADAC.

Therefore, there is considerable potential for falling fuel prices.

However, motorists can still save: According to the ADAC, the first filling station does not always have to be the cheapest.

It is therefore advisable to compare fuel prices beforehand using an app.

The automobile club also recommends that drivers of petrol engines use Super E10 instead of the more expensive E5 fuel – if this is possible.

A look at the clock can also help, because there is a lot of potential for savings here.

Diesel and petrol cost the most in the morning hours.

However, it is cheapest in the evening between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. and between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m.
