The probe that flew over the Red Planet succeeded in creating an optical illusion and ignited the surfers' imagination • Unfortunately, it is not a galactic animal but a successful combination of craters and other geological landscape forms

Researchers of the American space agency NASA published last week a photo taken by the probe that orbited Mars and succeeded in igniting the imagination of tens of thousands of their followers on Twitter.

The image they shared, taken through the spacecraft's advanced lens on the Red Planet in December, may not have been a research breakthrough, but it did have zoological amusement because at a glance it appeared to be a living creature.

"It kind of looks like a bear's face. What is it really?" the researchers asked on Twitter.

In fact, they also do not know what the material from which the hairy "facial features" of the galactic mammal were formed, but it is likely that it is two craters on the planet that look like eyes combined with a geological depression in the ground that looks like a mouth and a nose.

It is possible that the other "facial features", i.e. the lines that form the shape of a head, were formed by lava or mud deposits that gradually filled a huge crater created by the impact of another bone, known in professional parlance as an "impact crater".
